Because software mode just writes to the frame buffer. I don't think the IRQ is ever used then.

I tested your theory with the Aida64 CPU tests (which don't use the videocard at all). Memory tests don't seem to be affected by the PCI USB adapter. However all CPU tests (Queen Benchmark, PhotoWorxx, ZLib, AES, etc) are taking a 30 - 40% hit with the adapter. Also, I checked the adapter IRQ and …

Try to deactivate the USB adapter in Windows, so that it is not used. If the issue is still there then, it's hardware-related. If not, it's driver-related. I guess you have NUSB installed, too?

I think I know exactly why it is causing the lower scores with the USB card installed. USB polling. It can use a decent amount of CPU and especially for a lower speed CPU, the CPU usage needed is going to be significant. If you aren't using the USB ports for anything, it may not affect it as much.. …

Both of your boards use the VIA MVP3 chipset which is somewhat problematic in my opinion. ALi Aladdin V is somewhat worse when it comes to AGP compatibility but much better and more stable regarding IDE, PCI, IRQ steering etc.

I would like to make backup images for my retro PC, but none of the current offerings I've tried support such old hardware. I would like the software to boot from a floppy or CD/DVD, and use USB 2.0 drives for saving and restoring images. Thanks in advance.

Acronis True Image can do that for you, but you'll have to search for an older version. I use version 8.0 from a bootable CD to back up and restore my DOS and Win98 drives to an external hard disk connected to a USB 2.0 card. Never had any problems.

Why you don`t use MVP3 Onboard USB ? On 486 you can feel the impact on performance if you use a USB Mouse. The Overhead is significant. I would always go with PS/2 even on Athlon S462 etc. its faster, less overhead.. It even makes a difference on my Athlon 3200+. Specially if the CPU is very loaded …
