Are you sure you're giving the proper voltage to the chip? Most K5s need 3.52V instead of the 3.3V of the classic Pentiums. What you describe sounds like an unstable CPU.

The K5 up to P(R)100 used the model 0 core, which had hardware bugs. So it is possible that you get this behaviour from these bugs. Correct voltage and FSB should be fixed first, of course. 😉

Support for patches and alternate driver revisions (or alternate installation utilities) used to be a lot better for these boards/chipsets. Between official support and user groups (and old forums and chatrooms), I'm pretty sure there were a lot more options to tweak things to general functionality. …

Can you disable on-board cache from BIOS? Given that the K6-2+ has on-die L2 cache, the motherboard's cache gets to be L3 cache - might confuse Win98?

If i disable the onboard cache it boots and seems to work ok. How do i go about getting it working with the motherboard cache enabled, does it require a reinstall of Windows? What's the impact of the running with the motherboard cache disabled.
