Folks,

Dunno if any of y'all have ever ran across this before, I've found quite a few older Mac games where the sound and music doesn't work at all. All of the games in question use the "Bogas Driver v2.1" for music and sound. A few titles that come to mind are Spectrum Holobyte's Tetris and Super Tetris, as well as version 1.0 of Activision's Shanghai II.

From what I've read on the Internet, the problem was due to using version 2.1 of the Bogas sound driver on a Mac that has Sound Manager version 3.0 installed. I then stumbled on this, an update to Activision's Shanghai II, updating the game to version 1.05. Among other things, the update includes/installs version 2.2 of the Bogas sound driver (replacing the exisiting "BGAS" resource in Shanghai II's main game executable). Sound and music works fine in Shanghai II after applying the update 😀

Anyhow, I used the ResEdit utility to replace the resource type "BGAS" ("Bogas Driver 2.1") contained in any of the problematic game's files that use this older sound driver with the newer Bogas version 2.2 sound driver. I tried it on Tetris (contained in the file "Tetris Sounds") as well as Super Tetris, and the sound and music now works like a champ 😀

Anyways, you can download the Shanghai II version 1.05 updater from here -> http://riksun.riken.go.jp/archives/pc/info-ma … ii-105-updt.hqx , and then use ResEdit to extract the "BGAS" resource; and then overwrite the resource contained in any other games files that use the older version to fix the music and sound problem.

Just figured y'all might wanna know, in case you didn't already 😀
