Back from the pit... (with some slight EDITing)

Prince of Persia

Well-done conversions of the Apple II original.

Nicht, this is a nice list of Prince of Persia ports you made. But shame on you, you forgot to mention the PC Engine (TurboGrafx) and X68000 versions 😉

X68000

<Advantages> Much nicer graphically than the PC version.

Both were ported by Riverhill Soft and got a totally new and gorgeous soundtrack (especially the PC Engine one, which came on CD).

Well, it was a quickie list. The only reason I mentioned it was as an "item of interest", which by the way makes these two off-topic (the thread was for Mac versions only). Naughty Kaminari...

BTW, the X68000 looks like it's using a 640x400x16 mode with a lot of dithering. Is that correct?

Sounds nice, I'll have to check them out someday.

Now all you need is to do is find me the FM Towns versions of the Ultima games...in English. *heh*

Heh, thanks for making it a thread of its own 😀

You're right, the X68000 version is in 640x480 and 16 colours, although the computer was capable of resolutions from 65535 colours in 256x240 to 8 colours in 1024x1024, with some crazy resolutions in between: 256x240, 256x256, 512x240, 512x256, 512x512, 640x480, 768x512, 1024x1024. Phew.

It does sound an awful lot like the A500, doesn't it? Well, except that the X68000 had a much larger palette than the Amiga. Even the HAM6 mode couldn't display more than 4096 colours, with the slowness and colour-clashing drawbacks which you certainly remember 😉

Nope, because the A4000/40 was my last Amiga. So I was already used to dealing with HAM8 images at 640x400.

Artifacting was only an issue if you were using HAM in an action game (or you were using a poor-quality image program...DeluxePaint and Brilliance forever!)

It also had 4 hardware scrolling layers and hardware sprite zooming. Sound was a ym2151 and 4 channel DAC (not sure if it was a plain DAC or ADPCM) CPU was a 12Mhz 68000 (later versions used more powerfull CPU's) Most arcade ports were absolutely pixel perfect.

I'm an Amiga fan myself, but I have to admit that the X-68000 was a more powerfll machine. (it's probably the reason the Amiga never took off in Japan)

Be sure to check out the X-68000 versions of Technosoft's and Wolfteam's games, they're much nicer than the Megadrive ports.

Gang, maybe you guys never tried the Sega/Mega CD version 😀
I don't know where this list that is mentioned is, but I'll add my own screenshot of this one.
Sega CD games, as well as Sega Genesis games, are wonderful, for the most part.
And this game, like many Genesis/Sega CD games, has superb control. I know we all appreciate good control in a game like this!
Take a look!
Also, there was a NES version too. For me, the X68000 is far and away the best version.
Collecting the x68000 is difficult. Buying the games is very expensive, and the TOSEC set has not been updated in over 2 years.
