I was wondering if anyone's encountered the problem of having no sound on the movies in Tombraider 1 when using eSPXe. I am having this problem, and I can't seem to fix it.

Here is my configuration:

P4 2.26 GHz, 512MB
Soundblaster Live! Value
I'm using eSPXe 1.6.0 with:
Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.73
Eternal SPU Plugin 1.0
P.E. Op.S. CDR Driver 1.4

At first I couldn't get any of the music, but then I installed the audio cable from the CD-rom to the soundcard. Now, the in-game sounds work, the music works, but not the movies. I've tried several different plugins and settings. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Update: I decided to try Tombraider 1 with other emulators, with various plugin configruations, and I'm rather astounded at the results. Here they are, for the various emulators:

ePSXe - game works, but movies have no sound
bleem - emulator doesn't work with XP
Psemupro - emulator won't configure
Pcsx - Sound on movies work, actual game won't start
psinex - sound on movies is choppy, game doesn't work
PSXeven - sound on movies works (scratchy) music doesn't, game doesn't work
VGS - Sound on movies works, game works, but graphics are terrible and controls lag.

So I guess my question is, has anybody found a PSX emulator that runs this game well, with the movies and the music?

(Just to mention: I know I can run this game on the PC with glidos, and get good results, but apparently they left off a lot of of sounds off the PC version, and it also appears that the graphics on the movies are inferior.)

Okay, I got it working with ePSXe. Just in case anyone's interested, under Configure ePSXe at the options tab, clicking Enable MDECXA makes movies have sound. Also useful is Enable CDDA, which makes the music work, and for the cd plug-in,
SaPu's CD-Rom Plugin or Internal ePSXe W2K CDR - makes the sounds happen on time, at least so far. Some of the other cd plug-ins make the sound happen too early.

Overall, I would say there are many elements in the PSX version that's better than the PC. The movies are much better and smoother. The sounds on the PSX version are also better, probably because they could take advantage of the consistency with the PSX, and the Soundblaster was comparitively primitive at that time. The one thing that's annoying about it is that the screen wiggles around when you move, but this seems to be the case with all hardware accelerated Playstation games under emulation.

Movies on mine appear to be using a greater color-depth, but they appear to be no smoother on mine than the PC version.

I hear no difference in the audio between the two.

Well, okay, I might have misspoke regarding the smoothness movies. But they are definately much granier on the PC, and the lower color depth makes the color shades visible. They also have scanlines, which are optional on the PSX, but of course it looks much better without.

The sounds in the game actually sound good this far (though of course they don't happen as often). I was comparing the footfalls in the training area (Lara's home) on the PC to the Playstation version, and they sounded better on the PSX. But the PSX definately gets wearisome looking at the wavering screen, which I read happens because of the different resolution of the PSX from the PC. Is there any way to fix that, or minimize the effect?

Wavering? Eh?
NTSC PSX native resolution is, I believe, 320x240 (could be 320x288). Which, of course, will look extremely low-res and ugly.
Um, explain what you mean by Wavering before this goes any further... heh

Yes, it’s my fault.

... o.k.

But the PSX definately gets wearisome looking at the wavering screen,

I haven't noticed this, but then again, I was only testing it running in a window.

Thanks for posting the solution to his. For anyone else interested, in version 1.6 of epsxe this menu seems to have disappeared. In order to get sound working in movies, you can open regedit and search for "epsxe". When you get to the registry key, open the folder and change the value of "SoundXA" from 0 to 1.

Can't find that SoundXA in regedit.
