Didn't update the list today but wanted to post some news.

I checked out the FreeDOS webpage the other day and noticed the news that someone had put together a .ISO of freeware games. I downloaded that and this past weekend have been going through them and adding them to the list.

I'm up to about 2670 games right now and still adding.

Some games that really hooked me were Acid Tetris and Gravity Wars.

Updated the Windows 2003 list.

Bought Vampire The Masquerade today......not too bad but pretty rough around the edges. Haven't added it to the list yet. Plays just fine in 2003 so far!

2003 32bit list updated
2003 64bit list updated

Added Wild Metal Country/Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorrow to the list.

Found out that SP1 is going to be a pretty big update to Vista so that's probably when I'll begin Vista game testing (when SP1 comes out).

Updated Bink/Miles/Smacker list
Updated 2003 list

Alot of games required DirectMusic to work in Windows 2003, which was removed. Just running the games would give you a "memory could not be read" error message. Very helpful! If you load the games with the Windows Debug Tools then you'll see that the games require DirectMusic to load.

To get DirectMusic all you have to do is take the files and registry keys out of XP and put them into 2003 and the games work!

I did some quick tests with Vista and the games work without having to patch in DirectMusic so DirectMusic must be in Vista in some fashion. What's annoying is that the DirectMusic tab is missing from DxDiag so DirectMusic is probably being emulated or wrapped in some fashion. Not sure what the downsides are to this.....but since I won't be testing Vista compatibility comprehensively for quite some time (Got to finish XP/2003 64bit testing first....then mabye NT4/98 testing) I'll guess I'll have plenty of time to find out.

Been doing some Vista testing.

Some games are not working, requesting the file "d3drm.dll". This is the .dll that is used for D3D Retained Mode which was not included with Vista. If you copy this .dll from your XP install to your Vista SYSTEM32 directory then the games should work. (They have for me so far).

Been busy migrating 2000 domain controllers to 2003 and Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2007 (Powershell oh yeah!) so haven't had time to work on the list. Hopefully things will die down later this week.

In other news:
ATI finally released OGL drivers but they suck. (Yeah, suprising I know).
Creative released their Alchemy DirectSound3D to EAX wrapper (Haven't had time to check it out). The program that's included with it to automagically setup your games is only X-FI compatible but I've heard you can copy the Alchemy dsound.dll manually to the game folder and the wrapper should work for Audigy cards.

EDIT

WRONG! Tried doing this with my Audigy 2 for NWN 2 and it didn't work. Stuck with stereo sound in Vista. Bastards.

LOL.

Here's an article from ExtremeTech that determines if Windows Vista will run your games:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1 ... 571,00.asp

It should be more like will Windows Vista run HIS games. heh.

Not to worry I'm slowly listing what games are compatibility with Vista on my list. Between XDDM and WDDM, 32bit and 64bit versions of over 2800 games. While still in no way is this a thorough analysis, it's far better of one than you'll get from the above article.

Updated alot of games in the Vista 32bit XDDM list.
Working on the 32bit WDDM and the Vista 64bit list as well.

You'll notice alot of games with the "P" category in the Vista list and the comment "Supports 3D Sound". This is a problem in Vista since games using DirectSound3D will only use stereo sound in Vista so therefore they are "Problem" games. Not sure what I'll do in the future with these, it depends on if Creative licenses Alchemy out to other companies or if other companies write wrappers for these games. For now they will just get the lovely yellow color which when your comparing Vista to 2000/2003/XP doesn't really look that good for Vista. :)

Updated Vista 32bit XDDM list (Almost done!)
Added Sega MasterSystem games.

Going to install the latest Ubuntu and finally start heavy linux testing. Vista is slow as **** on this Dell Latitude D510 compared to XP. (Okay not that slow but very annoying, especially file access issues).

Updated DosBox list.
Updated 2000 list.
Updated 2003 list

Currently working on Vista 32bit/64bit lists.

Games that just work:

2000 = 1050 games
XP = 1054 games
2003 32bit = 960 games
Vista 32bit = 564 games
DosBox = 997 games

Defintely stick with 2000/XP if your worried about overall compatibility. (or at least keep a dual-boot).
