Hi,

I have exactly the same problem as Ironheart with the install dropping to the desktop.

I do the same with running VDM (both the original and launchpad vesion).

I have:

Intel P4 1.8 Ghz
Intel D850GB Mobo
768 meg PC800 RIMM
Pioneer 105s DVD 16/32
Generic 52X CD drive
2 Maxtor 40 Gig 133Mhz HDs
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer
ATI 8500 Radeon
Windows XP Home SP1.

All the newest drivers.

If someone has a blow by blow of a good install I would love to hear it.

BTW I am using the American release of the game.

Hi,
I have a problem with the sound in Discworld 1. I have the sound and everything runs smooth with VDMS, but after a while it starts to jump like a old gramophone. The problem gets fixed if I go back into XP, and into the game again. And then aften a while it starts again. What should I do?

Sounds like you have a flaky sound card/drivers. Of course, you haven't told us what your sound card is, so we can't confirm if it's that or something else that we can fix.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Could this be a DOS/NT timing issue? Where the Windows timer can't keep up with what the DOS game requires?

Oh, my soundcard is a SoundBlaster Live with a driver found in XP.

Woof. If you are using XP's "Live" driver, that would explain a lot. It's terrible. You need Creative Lab's drivers.

I installed Creative Lab's driver, but the problem is still there...

Think we need Vlad's opinion on this. It sounds like an NT timer issue, but I just don't know NT.

Keep the Creative drivers though, even if they weren't the source of trouble here, they are of notoriously poor quality.

It was a no-go unfortunately. The DOS install program starts for DW2 and no longer gives the SuperVGA error, but now it just kicks back to the desktop for seemingly no reason shortly after.

Trying to reuse the shortcut that LaunchPad created just crashes Windows Explorer.

Thanks anyway though.

Hi,
Discworld 2 DOS Problem with the VBE-TEST(VESA-TEST)-Program. Its more a Graphic-Chip TEST Program!

I had the same problem on my AMD 1.4GHZ
Geforce2 card
WinXP Pro DirectX9 SP1

My soulution: copy the files via Batch file!
And avoid Graphic Test files 😀
make a disc.bat file
edit the source=Discworld1 CD
edit the installation folder=maybe c:\discworld2

REM SET Your Source and Destination on your own
REM SOURCE=Discworld CD 1 !!!!!!!!

SET SOURCE=E:
SET DEST=C:\Discworld

mkdir %DEST%
mkdir %DEST%\CACHE
mkdir %DEST%\SAVE

copy %SOURCE%\DOSCONF %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\DW2.BAT %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\DWB.EXE %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\GERINS.IMJ %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\INSTALLD.INF %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\RM.DRV %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\SAMPLE.AD %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\SAMPLE.BNK %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\SAMPLE.OPL %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\SETSOUND.EXE %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\SETUP.EXE %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\TITLEDOS.BMP %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\UNINSTLL.EXE %DEST%

copy %SOURCE%\*.lst %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\*.dig %DEST%
copy %SOURCE%\DW2\*.SCN %DEST%\CACHE\

Yeah and now it works. Because the program cannot start the VBE-TEST Program!

Sorry for this posting, but i cannot add the file to the other posting!

And Discworld 2 is really bad 😀

XP Windows Install: DirectX=Graphic-Problem
XP DOS Install=UNIVBE/VBE-TEST=Graphic-Problem

And of course:
poor DOS-Sounddriver 😀

Hi,

Univbe is the problem!

It's useless!!!!!!!! It does not support modern graphic chips!
And modern graphic cards have already a VESA 3.0 BIOS.

Last but not least: This program crashs the "WinXP DOS Emulation"
Because its "graphic chip detection" routine.

The Discworld2 Install- and MAIN-Program starts always this damn TEST-Program. And the Dos-Box will always crash!!!!

I showed a way to avoid this useless program to RUN!
That's all!

Another way could be to replace the UNI-VBE Files on the CD-ROM!
And so on!

You might try VDMSound or CVS build of DOSBox from
http://www.mypixels.dk/forums/ .
But you need to register and post some messages there before downloading CVS. And do not forget to read guides to VDMSound and DOSBox on this board before using them.

The entire system?? or just the DOS window? Keep a Task Manager open in the background so that you can kill NTVDM if you need to. And Jiri, CVS is no longer being built by rjpa and is available only to developers and beta testers.

Yes, it’s my fault.

CVS is still build by rpja. (temporary for free it seems)
But I provide the developpers and beta testers with their own version.
This is because the update interval of rpja is too high for proper testing.
And it gives me some nice testing with parameters.

Water flows down the stream
How to ask questions the smart way!

Hello!

I try to run the game (discworld I) with vdsm sound but it stands that the "english.smp" file is missing. The english.inx file I´ve got by uploading the fix (I use the underdog version)
Otherwise I can´t get the voices to work. The backgroundmusic is no problem.

I know this is an old topic, but I have the same problem with discworld (downloaded english.idx, english.smp is still missing), and since he hasn't got any answers I took myself the liberty of posting this message
