I am trying to run strife with sound on XP SP2. It is patched up to the latest, and I have no problems with windows sound. The sound is intergrated, called "soundmax digital audio"

I've tried 1.2.0 beta, and the last official, with updates. There is a very noticeable stutting in the sound. I've tried Lands of Lore 1, and the same stuttering happens. I've tried setting the buffer time to a higher amount, but the stuttering remains.

Any tips on how to fix this? It is making the games unplayable.

Try tinkering with advanced options such as cap dos timer frequency and try to use a lower cpu value.

You can use ZDoom http://zdoom.org/download.html or Vavoom http://www.vavoom-engine.com/ for Strife. The game should work also in DOSBox (but I did not test it). Lands of Lore works fine in DOSBox.

When I last tried those source ports several months ago, they each had quirks. Still, it was a lot better than running in DOSBox (and VDMSound too probably).

I also tried Vavoom several months ago and yes, there were some glitches - but not too big and the game was playable. I guess that these bugs were probably fixed in newer versions.
I tested ZDoom last month and Strife worked just fine - though I played only part of the game. (Lys, ZDoom is in cab archive - extract it, put the files into the Strife directory and run zdoom.exe. And I would recommend to have enabled "always mouselook" in the options.)
