I have Vista 32 bit and followed the instructions at the Glidos site to
install VDMSound, Carmageddon, the 3dfx patch, and Glidos.
http://www.glidos.net/carma.html?lang=en#insttomb

The instructions don't say if Vista owners need to install VDMSound, so I
installed it anyway. According to the instructions:

Once you have done that, put the Carmageddon CD in your drive, find on it the
file called "install.exe", right-click that file and select from the menu "Run
with VDMS". Let the game autodetect your soundcard; that will work when using
VDMSound. You will probably find that VDMSound's hint box appears before the
installation starts. Take that opportunity to disable it by unchecking the
check box.

That's what happened except I didn't see a "hint box." At the end of the
installation of Carmageddon, I got a DOS-type screen, black with white letters,
with a blinking cursor I didn't know what to do with, so, without any
instructions for that, I "x"ed it out.

The Glidos directions say I can now try playing Carmageddon. But if I go to
the folder and click the Start file, I get a little menu that says

The New Direct...
\Erag
OK

I click OK and get

System Error
Unable to change the directory!
OK

I click OK and get

System Error
Unable to copy file!
OK

I click OK and it reappears with Start Menu > Programs > The Learning Company
folder, which contains two things: Install AOL FREE Trial! and Register
Carmageddon.

I also get

System Error
Unable to create a desktop!
OK

When I tried to install the 3dfx patch, I got:

C:\Users\(PC name)\Desktop\CARMAG`1\3DFXPA`1\3DfxCarm.exe
This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.
Close Ignore

I clicked "Ignore" twice and the menu went away.

I installed and tried to run Glidos (as Administrator) for
Carmageddon and got:

Can't find C:\intrplay\Carma\Carmav.EXE
Carmageddon is not installed correctly for use with Glidos.

I don't see Carmav.EXE in the game folder or the game CD.

Sorry there's no solution for Carmageddon under Vista at the moment. Glidos works fine under Vista, but the games themselves wont run directly. Hence you need VDos32 (which is now included with Glidos), but VDos32 has problems with Carmageddon. I've been working on it, but I've hit a bit of a brick wall.
