I've finally managed to get TR:UB installed with Glidos (PSX's were never this much trouble) but I've got a problem... the graphics in the scenary are all mixed up and they swirl around, its all very surreal - heres a picture -

any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.

Heres the
OpenGlide.ini
for my version of Glidos 1.24 (unregistered)

I've had to rename it
OpenGlide.txt
in order to get this forum to let me attach it but other than that it's unaltered.

And my other details are:

Windows 98 SE
AMD Athlon 2000+ xp (1700ghz)
SiS 740 Rev00 134mhz graphics chip with 64mb ram (D3D, openGL)
512mb SDRAM
C-Media AC97 Audio device (I think)

I think it supports OpenGlide it has an OpenGL option: see -

It does?

I have to buy another graphics card then? Would these work?

GeForce4MX 440 - this has OpenGL 1.2
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-GF41MX

or this one?

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 - this has OpenGL 1.4
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-FX2128

Completely different device. Part of the reason it's easier with the PSX is that you have no choice in it's configuration. The PC allows for huge number of configurations...which in turn creates potential new problems in the process.

We need as much info about your PC as possible to troubleshoot (since we don't have physical access to it). That why we ask for the info "up front" in the "Posting Guidelines".

Hrmm...SiS track record isn't too hot.

I had a SiS video card myself that I got at a very low price. I found it's 3D support to be very "spotty". Sometimes it was fine, other times it was really slow, sometimes 3D was distorted (like yours), IIRC some games just failed completely.

Maybe.

Would these work?

GeForce4MX 440

I wouldn't recommend it. It's a good card, but they got it's low price by compromising parts of the GeForce's design to save money. Technically, it's inferior to a GeForce3 (even though it's identified as a GF4).

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

That's a budget version of NVidia's latest GeForce. It would probably be an excellent card. Most of the newer ATI and NVidia cards are some of the most compatible cards out there.

One thing you might want to check on...many of the GeForce FX video cards have a powerful, but noisy cooling fan. You might want to find out your noise-level tolerance before you get it.

You might also want to try the GLExcess demo from http://www.glexcess.com/ to see if it will work properly on your SiS video. It was coded without using any "tricks", so if it doesn't work, I'd lose SiS.

The musical version is 19 Megs, but the silent tester is under 3.

Too right! I can't get a game to work and the gamepad I bought doesn't work either!

k thanks. I downloaded the demo and the results weren't very good, there were a lot of what I can only describe as "dropouts". So I wen't to the SiS site and downloaded the latest drivers (stupid really I should have done it before) and replayed the demo - the results were excellent only a couple of errors.

However I tried playing TR again and it's still very surreal, theres maybe a slight improvement but it's still not really playable 🙁

I'm wondering if maybe it's because I have an AMD cpu chipset rather than an Intel one?

Is this graphics cards ok?

Ah thank you theres definately been a big improvement what with this and the new graphics drivers, Lara's polygons seem to be in the right places most of the time now and I can actually read the text in the ring menus now. The backgrounds are still nowhere near right though, hmm.

Before giving up to a new graphic card, you may want to try these settings:

[Options]
EnableMMX=1
CreateWindow=1
InitFullScreen=1
EnableMipMaps=0
IgnorePaletteChange=0
EnableFog=1
EnablePrecisionFix=1
Wrap565to5551=0
EnableMultiTextureEXT=1
EnablePaletteEXT=1
EnablePackedPixelsEXT=0
EnableVertexArrayEXT=0
EnableSecondaryColorEXT=1
EnableFogCoordEXT=1
PalettePrecision=16
TextureMemorySize=16
WrapperPriority=2
FrameBufferMemorySize=8

[Edit] Since you've got an Athlon, I'm not sure about the MMX option on this CPU. Someone will enlighten me, I'm sure.

Maybe the gamepad is at fault. Besides its still easier than typing up a letter on a PS1. *heh*

Like I said, that should give you an idea of "basic performance". If you try to run something that really "pushes" OpenGL, it will make your card cry.

Hrmm. These two guys seemed to like the 7500:

http://www.slcentral.com/reviews/hardware/vid … ati/radeon7500/
http://www.pcabusers.com/reviews/7500/7500.html

Only thing is, they both measured performance as below that of a "GeForce 3 Ti200". Unless you can get it really cheap, I would recommend a higher-powered model.

Not sure what you mean. The original AMD Athlons have support for Intel's MMX and AMD's own 3DNow!, as well as what AMD terms Enhanced MMX and Enhanced 3DNow! which were new features with the Athlon processors. I'm not sure if there were any further additions to the instruction set with the Athlon XPs. Maybe Snover or someone would know.

Suffice to say, MMX is supported. Intel's SSE is not.

But we're starting to go off track with my post here, so I recommend that we don't pursue the topic of weird processor quirks much further in this thread.

*LOL* each to his own, at least I know that when I put a PSX disc in that or a PS2 I know it's actually going to work! Besides its much more comfortable playing a game looking at my 32' widescreen TV and PS2 sitting in an armchair than it is squinting at my 19' PC monitor!

Unless you can get it really cheap, I would recommend a higher-powered model.

Ok I was thinking about a Radeon ATI 9600
http://www.sapphiretech.com/vga/9600.asp
as it has full OpenGL 2.0 and DirectX 9.0 compliance etc but I was reading on the other Glidos forum
http://www.smartgroups.com/message/listbydisc … .cfm?GID=775298
thats people have reported problems with Radeon ATI 9.x cards and Glidos/TR and since I know a bit fat zero about graphics cards in general I was wondering if someone out there could recommend me a latest generation i.e DX9.0 compatible, not too expensive one that they know actually does work with Glidos 1.24/TR? Thanks

The budget FX card uses passive cooling (it can afford to with the lower micron size). Athlon XP supports MMX, Integer SSE, SSE, 3DNow!, 3DNow! 2, and I think one more implementation of 3DNow!. Actually support for all the instruction sets is what causes them to run so hot. If they just dropped their 3DNow! stuff, their chips would very likely run at or below Intel's in terms of heat.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Obviously not. I've ordered a GeForce FX5600 card anyway lets hope it works:
