I have installed the latest version of Glidos and the latest Direct X (8.1a). Whenever I start Carmageddon with Glidos it reports that the program cannot be run in a DOS box. If I start Carmageddon with its own .exe it runs fine. If I start the game from the Glidos.bat it runs fine and if I start the game from the Glidos.pif file it runs fine. The settings that Glidos is creating in the Pif file are obviously OK but the game will not run if started from the Glidos GUI. All the above files also start fine from within a DOS shell window. I am stumped as to how to solve the problem. I have tried editing the Glidos.inf file but continue to get the same result. I am running Win98se on an Aopen MX3W Pro board with a Celeron 700 processor. Any ideas guys as the game runs faultlessly in normal mode. I do have the 3dfx patch installed in Carmageddon.

There is no GliDOS.INF, only a GliDOS.INI. INF files are installer configuration files. INI files are runtime configuration files. 😀

Now, please clarify: you say that you can run the game with GliDOS except when calling it from a GUI? That doesn't sound right. You've made sure that it is pointing to the 3Dfx executable and not the normal executable? Also, make sure VESASupport is set to no. The window should automajickally maximize anyway.

Paul?

Yes, it’s my fault.

Sorry to be difficult to understand. I am not yet familiar with the Glidos files. I have solved the immediate problem I had by changing the Glidos.pif and GlidosF.pif to remove the 'Close on exit' option. This then showed the stupid mistake I made. I had Glidos pointed to Carm95.exe, not Carma.exe. Once I made this change the DOS box remained on screen and I realised the error. I have however changed it to point at the correct file and now the game starts but crashes witht eh following error:

GLIDOS executed an invalid instruction in
module I81XGICD.DLL at 0167:027d2c30.

I don't expect an instant fix for this and will continue to look at it myself. Thanks for the FAST reply to my problem and thanks for the effort to support this product. Once it works I will be sending you $10 fast.

Good lord, you're using an Intel i810 graphics chip? Upgrade, man! Upgrade! There's no WAY you're going to get any kind of tollerable framerate with that, and it looks like it has pretty flaky drivers anyway. Just find a GeForce3. They're cheap to find and they're great cards. I can't even FIND that motherboard on their site, although it seems that their Taiwan server is down, so I'm not entirely surprised since I can only access their 'current' motherboards for sale. Make sure you have an AGP slot.

Yes, it’s my fault.

No problems. I am using this computer because it is a spare and I use it for testing. The server in Taiwan is probably down because they also use MX3W Pro boards (LOL). I agree and will reload another computer with a fresh copy of 98se and try then. Thank you for the FAST replies. I will let you know as soon as it works (nothing worse than always getting BAD news all the time). These boards only have 3 PCI slots, no AGP and nearly impossible to stop the on-board video causing problems. Thanks again to all.

Yeah, you'll definitely need something with a better graphics card. GliDOS does not do anything to modify your registry AT ALL -- not even an uninstaller. Just delete the GliDOS directory and it's gone. 😀

Yes, it’s my fault.

Well, he might want to delete the GliDOS-specific .OVL files that it copies into GliDOS game directories.
