As of June 2019, what is the most up-to-date browser for 32-bit XP SP3 for SSE2+ systems? Would it be Maxthon 5.2.7.3000? I read in the palemoon fork thread for XP concerning Maxthon,

it doesn't seem to allow running most DRM sites (netflix, etc). Second, it is not stable/usable on XP in portable mode. Third, and most importantly: DO NOT INSTALL IT! It messes with the firewall directly, and somehow manages to bypass programs controlling access to security settings in a non-transparent way.

https://msfn.org/board/topic/177125-my-build- … e/142/#comments

So far, the portable version appears to work on my AM2 system. But is it anymore secure than using Advanced Chrome 54.20.6530.0 or Firefox ESR 52.9.0?

Is there any security or other benefits in using Serpent (Basilisk) 2018.08.25 or SeaMonkey 2.49.4 over Firefox ESR 52.9.0?

It appears that Mypal is still being updated and is on version 28.5.2 (updated 2019-06-05). Is version 28.5.2 based on Firefox ESR 52.9.0, or some earlier Firefox release? Is there any security benefit in using Mypal over Advanced Chrome 54.20.6530.0 or Firefox ESR 52.9.0?

Dug out my Athlon XP 2800+ and am in the process of setting it up again. Just finished hardware testing to prove stability and now working on setting up images for all the Windows versions. Interested to see if my 9700 pro works in NT4. 😀

My iogear KVM is being a PITA with this computer for some reason so bought an extra mouse to bypass the KVM if I can't get it working.

Vmware will be mainly used for testing but this machine will be useful to test if software requires SSE2 and to test graphics that don't work in virtual machines.

PCem will be used to test if software requires SSE.

Virtualbox SSE

1. get virtualbox 4.2 ( 4.3 did not work for me on Windows host)
2. create windows xp x32 vm.
3. go to virtualbox folder and run

vboxmanage modifyvm vm_name --cpuidset 0x1 0x0001067a 0x00000800 0x00000209 0x018bf3ff
this will disable SSE and SSE2 on guest OS. To revert changes execute

vboxmanage modifyvm <name> --cpuidremoveall
First command will add next lines to vm_name.vbox file to CPUsection

<CpuIdLeaf id="1" eax="67194" ebx="2048" ecx="521" edx="25949183"/>

Anyone know where can I get the blackwingcat kernel extensions and its updates for Win 2k? So I can try the newer options for web browsing.

EDIT: Nevermind. I just got around this. And I installed New Moon 28, so all is OK. Finally, Youtube browsing!

If only I could make XP look like 98 (with all the XP branding replaced as well), then I could consider doing a VM for that Chrome test!

I am very interested. Advanced Chrome 54 has started receiving too many errors on websites to use regularly. I had to switch to MyPal, which feels a lot slower. I also started using Roytam's Serpent recently, but MyPal has works on more websites that I've gone to (all of them actually). I decided I didn't want to mess around with the Chinese Chrome ports, or whatever they're called. For financial transactions, I turn on a MacPro 1,1 desktop which runs an updated Ubuntu 16 + El Capitan.

As far as I can see, Chrome 76 on XP has some few problems still after he fixed a big list of them. GDI font rendering is one of them. But looking from the screenshots, it looks almost ready for prime time. That's good news for XP fans. A modern browser on XP can make the OS last longer.

Is there any Chrome variant between Chromium 54 and Chrome 76 which runs on XP and is not from China?

How did you do that?

I have a Win98 VM and I can't for the life of me find a greasemonkey version or YT2Player version to install on Retrozilla for that to work. I've spent two nights searching for this.

EDIT: As of now, there is no browser capable of rendering modern HTML5 fully and neither play the YouTube videos on Windows 98. I did my tests visiting some brazilian news websites and both YouTube & its alternative mirror, www.invidio.us . Although Retrozilla does have TLS 1.2, it was unable to render properly some news websites and YouTube videos. The alternate mirror, www.invidio.us, has a different layout but still rendered badly and was unable to play the videos.

To sum up, probably the best route to still go classic Windows is Windows 2000 or XP. I'm sad. I wanted Win 98 for nostalgic purposes.

As of now, the best browses for youtube on Windows 2000, with latest BlackWingCat's kernel extenders, are:

SeaMonkey 2.49.5 (last version to support XP/Vista);
New Moon 28.8.0a1.

Both can stream youtube at lowest resolution extremely well. You can try higher, but you might experience stuttering. Most pages render HTML5 well.

I have them both skinned to look pretty similar to Netscape.

It's just a shame these browsers can't work on Windows 98 even with KernelEx. For me, these two are the best browsers available for older systems.

Both even pass Acid3 test with 99/100.

Wunderbar98 via MSFN

To the best of my ability, no additional 'missed' ciphers were discovered, aside from the two recommended earlier by ClassicNick. These are also the only two green light cipher results from the SSL Labs test. As mentioned previously they help with site connections and should be added as new true booleans in RetroZilla v2.2 via about:config:

security.ssl3.ecdhe_ecdsa_aes_128_gcm_sha256
security.ssl3.ecdhe_rsa_aes_128_gcm_sha256

All other RetroZilla ciphers were reported to be weak with the following ciphers flagged as INSECURE. These insecure ciphers should be disabled (toggled false) via about:config, filter string rc4_128:

security.ssl3.ecdh_ecdsa_rc4_128_sha
security.ssl3.ecdh_rsa_rc4_128_sha
security.ssl3.ecdhe_ecdsa_rc4_128_sha
security.ssl3.ecdhe_rsa_rc4_128_sha
security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_128_md5
security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_128_sha

Browsing Vogons with retrozilla

The following ciphers are not included in the latest release of Retrozilla but can be added:

1. Download Retrozilla 2.2 https://github.com/rn10950/RetroZilla/releases/tag/2.2
2. Go to about:config
3. Right-click on white area. Click New->Boolean
4. Add the following and set each to true:
security.ssl3.ecdhe_ecdsa_aes_128_gcm_sha256
security.ssl3.ecdhe_rsa_aes_128_gcm_sha256

5. Go here: ucp.php?mode=login

Under login enter the username in the first box and the password in the second.

6. ???

7. Profit.
