Hi all,

Aeon (windows-only, closed-source DOS emulator) version 0.61 has been released:

Does anyone have experience with this? Is it any good?

Regards,
Ronald

Looking over the notes and the blog it looks like it might be where DOSBox was at about 0.58. Looks like he is reinventing the wheel. I could possibly see someone doing it for a difference emphasis, like applications, as opposed to games, but that doesn't seem to be what he is doing. All of his screenshots are of games.

Found this: http://gdaeon.wordpress.com/2009/09/23/do-we- … r-dos-emulator/

So probably he'll get bored after awhile and his project will die (no source). heh.

"Aeon's hardware requirements are pretty high if you want to get smooth audio/video performance in a demanding game"

How much power do you need to emulate a 386, soundblaster, and maybe an early 3d accelerator? If he can't get this level of performance out of a modern computer at speeds comparable to what they were in the early 90's with decent framerates and without the audio stuttering then he's doing something seriously wrong.

I'm sure you would be able to code something more efficient. Can't wait for your DOS emulator.

I didn't say I could. Why do people always say that when someone is critical of something someone else is doing? If you call yourself a programmer and can't get a Core 2 Duo to act like a 386 or a DX 10 or 11 video card to act like a Rage 3D or TNT, you really are doing something wrong.

Not to perform thread necromancy, but since June Aeon has become open-source under Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL).

In case emulator authors want to take a look... 😀
