I'm happy to announce that me and a few buddies from Ludum Dare started a new thing recently, called:
DOS Game Club (https://www.dosgameclub.com)

It's like a book club, but instead of reading the same book, members of the club play the same DOS game. We're playing one game per month and started in March by playing Doom (currently for April we're playing Grand Prix Circuit and in May we'll be playing SimCity 2000).

During the month we talk about the game on our forums or over on #dosgameclub on irc.afternet.org. We also try to do multiplayer sessions, compare scores, or whatever makes sense in the game we're playing that particular month to get together and see how we're all doing.

At the end of the month we record a roundtable discussion podcast with a few of the members, to wrap up our thoughts on the game we've been playing. The first podcast (about Doom) is available now.

The games we play are suggested by the community. We'll try to alternate between well-known blockbusters and more obscure hidden gems. Anything that is suggested will be considered, the only requirement is that the game is available for DOS. We are after all, the DOS Game Club!

So, if you are interested in DOS games and want to share your experiences, you're more than welcome to join!

[edit] Episode 2 about Grand Prix Circuit is out now! I'll keep a list of episodes here:

Thanks for all your kind words! It's really encouraging to see our little idea is received so well. I'm also very happy with the design, which is made by our webmaster and podcast co-host rnlf. I'll pass on the compliments 😁

And it's cool you're posting in the archived forum, dr_st. We left it open exactly for this purpose 😀 Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

Very nice idea, though regularly playing games on preset dates is not suitable for me during these days. And I really loved the website look and feel!...

Well tayyare, it's not so much a preset date, it's really more that you're given a month to check out this particular game. There's no need to play it on a specific moment during that month, it's just the amount of time you're given to check it out 😀

Since Simcity 2000 is next month's I might dig a little more into the DOS release for differences (while there's an obvious lack of a debug menu the Mac and win versions have). So far i've only got this scrapped up

This term sounds so 90's! So I guess in this context it's acceptable. I just installed Wordpress and made a theme. Wouldn't call that "webmastering" 😒

Heh, I remember reading about that.

I understand the Windows version doesn't have the "Church virus", wherein typing swears causes your town to be overrun with churches.

With April over, we've archived the Grand Prix Circuit forums and started a fresh one for May in which we play SimCity 2000 \o/

The podcast in which we wrap up Grand Prix Circuit is available here: https://www.dosgameclub.com/grand-prix-circuit/

We ran a little late this month, but episode 3 of our podcast (about SimCity 2000) is out now: https://www.dosgameclub.com/simcity-2000/

This month we're playing 2 games (wat!!): Scorched Earth and Strike Commander.

In July we'll be playing Command & Conquer, exciting!

Aww man this is such a good idea, but I cant play 🙁
Must be getting old, I struggle to focus on playing games now, instead I keep tampering with the computer. this would have given me a reason to persist 😀
Last few years I kind of focus on games exactly 20 years ago, so this year is 1997

Last year got my new toy, a son, which takes most of my time up, otherwise I would have signed up for sure!
...and yes 97 is 20 years ago, depressing right!

Thanks guys! We're really having a great time doing this stuff!

We played 2 games in June: Scorched Earth and Strike Commander. We thought they would both be relatively small games, but that turned out to be somewhat of a mistake. We did record two podcast episodes about them though.

In the Scorced Earth one we thought it would be a good idea to play the game while talking about it, which turned out to be... less than ideal, haha.

We just released the Strike Commander episode, in which we sit down with Ben Lesnick (from wcnews.com) who has lots of cool stories to tell. Quite something!

You can check them out here: https://www.dosgameclub.com/scorched-earth/ & https://www.dosgameclub.com/strike-commander/

Meanwhile we've been playing Command & Conquer in July and will record a podcast about that shortly. For August we're playing Quest for Glory and in September we've got Commander Keen lined up. What a rollercoaster 😁
