A virtio-snd sound driver for Win9x might be useful. (Even though VMWare unfortunately doesn't support VirtIO devices yet, at least to my knowledge.)

This is the one I use Win9x Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI Sound Card Drivers
Win 11 - Intel i7-1360p - 32 GB - Intel Iris Xe - Sound BlasterX G5
On vmware the BSOD could be solved by disabling the pcibridges (https://archive.org/details/Win9xSoundDriversVMwareFusion). Unless this is a different BSOD.

This works on Win95 Guest, but not works on Win98 FE Guest. Disabling the pcibridges on Win98 FE Guest still cause BSOD.
