The most noteworthy thing to come out of the keynote speech was a possible release date for the long awaited Quake 3 Arena source code. Barring things like getting the GPL license all squared away, Carmack told the crowd the Q3A source code could be released as early as next week.

Way to go ID! This is one of the reasons why ID will always get my money.....even if their single-player games suck, I'll still buy 'em. 😁

Q3's engine was just fantastic. I remember running it flawlessly even on the humblest of configs. As a matter of fact, I've just bought American McGee's Alice at Sold Out and I still find it visually stunning!

Indeed, only iD have the balls to show off their source code! It's perhaps never that 'pretty' but it sure delivers the goods. There's still a lot of life left in the Q3 engine given that a lot of modern features will be added by the bright sparks out there 😀

Source code to other famous titles has been released as well (Descent and Marathon come to mind), but I have to respect iD's consistency in releasing the source for their various titles over the years.

I wonder if it's not a coincidence that Raven has finally transitioned from making Quake 3 engine games to making Doom 3 engine games (e.g. Quake 4). Hopefully people will eventually be able to make advanced Quake 3 source ports that run old Raven games (e.g. Voyager: Elite Force, Jedi Outcast) the way Doom source ports can run Heretic, Hexen and even Strife (supported by ZDoom and Vavoom ports).
