One year ago, I started building a retro PC.
At the begining I just wanted a Pentium 200 with an ISA sound card to run my dos games unmute and to run old Windows games.
I have now collectected lots of computers parts and It became more powerfull than expected.

ASUS P/I-P55T2P4 rev 3.10 (a legendary socket7 mobo)
BIOS patched for large HD
512kB L2 cache onboard
Tag Ram 32k8 15ns
K6-2 350@375 (4.5*83) don't remap 2x to 6x
PentiumIII fan/heasink (there is an Intel sticker on it)
256MB FPM 60ns ECC (2*128MB)
Voodoo5 5500 PCI MAC 64MB
SB AWE32 PnP CT3980 with 8MB (speaker routed to it)
DB-50XG
SB Live! 5.1 + LiveDrive IR (and its remote RM-900)
NIC 3C905B-TX-NM
SCSI AVA-2904 only used to share some files with an amiga HD
20GB Seagate IDE HD
Win98SE set up to start in DOS (BootGUI=0)
Screen NEC MultiSync LCD1560NX connected to V5's dvi port
Routeur Linksys BEFSX41

Maybe I'll make it all SCSI

I was using a 3D blaster Voodoo2 12MB with a Matrox G200 until I get a Voodoo4
I got a 2nd 3D blaster V2 and I installed them in my Athlon64

It has became too powerfull for some games, I was able to watch DivX movies (not under Windows, too slow!)
I decided to begin building an older computer
I started last week a 486

Gigabyte GA-486IM: UM8881/UM8886, 4 PCI, 4ISA, 2 with VL
256kB cache
Turbo switch disable cache
486DX2-66 actually a P24D : 486DX2 write-back cache
80MHz with fan/heatsink unstable
I also have a 486DX-33 so I can swap
48MB (2*16MB + 2*8MB 32bit simm interleaved) only the 1st 32MB are cachable
230W PSU (from 1993)
Matrox MilleniumII PCI 4MO
SB AWE32 CT2760
VL-bus multi-IO GVU863VL (I'm still looking for its jumpers setting)
3C905B-COMBO PCI
2GB Fujitsu HD

I tried some modern PCI card in its slots
In the 2nd slot I have only make working:
NIC RTL8029, NIC HP2978A, USB2 Zioncom Uc 0401, with any other card, it doesn't start up.
In the other slot no problem:
my Voodoo2: I played Tomb Raider with an average of 17fps (7 to 30)
SB Live! value with its native support in mpxplay
VIA usb2, I used an usb pendrive under win98se

I have heard of Banshee running on 486 (I don't remember where) using an old version of the drivers (1.05.00 ?), I tried a Maxi Gamer Phoenix but I only a red screen (incompatibility with its BIOS and 486 ?)

I'm trying to build a 386 rig:
I have 3 mobo:
- Forcom M396
i386SX-25
4 simm slots
PC CHIPS TCL14L100

- DFI 386SX-ANE
Am386SX-33
4 simm slots
ALI M1217-40

- (unknown)
Am386DX-40
256kB cache
8 simm slots
40MHz needs 60ns memory, 70ns memory can work with 1 ws
UM82C482AF
MR BIOS

8 SIMMs 1MB 60ns Topless and 4 SIMMs 4MB 70ns Samsung (4 other in my AWE32s)

fpu IIT 3C87SX-33 (sadly, it's only for 386SX)

gfx:
Tseng ET4000AX 1MB, vesa through a tsr
Trident 9000C 512kB VESA 1.2 bios
ARCHE VGA 256kB CL-GD 510/520 w/ switch to emulate CGA HGC EGA

nic:
3C509B-TPO and SMC EtherEZ

scsi:
AHA-1520B and AHA-1542CP

sound:
SB2 CT1350B
SB16 +ASP CT2290
SB AWE32 PnP CT3990

AT like case
200W psu from 1990 with orange power switch in the rear right corner and noisy fan

Just great setup! Nearly like my rig 😀
My oldskool gaming Peecee...

Can you test your awe32 ct3990 + db50xg tandem for buggy midi playback in some titles?
in example: run hexen map02 and listen music.

I discovered the true potential of my mobo reading your post, I was using it for two months with a K6 200@225 (3*75) (first model) with 64MB EDO

It was the first mobo I got with 430HX,when I wanted to replace a DFI 586IPVG with 430VX

I will try midi in Hexen later, I did not use my DB50XG in any other card
I use it for FF7 and Duke Nukem 3D wich I previously played with opl3

Nice systems!

The TAG-RAM on the P/I-P55T2P4 is a nice touch, many HX boards go without it and leave the powers of the chipset unused.
Do you use the 83 MHz FSB speed all the time? Is it stable?
Converting the storage system to SCSI would be cool, but only if you don't care about the noise. And it wouldn't be complete without a nice high-end SCSI CD-ROM drive from the days of yore 😉

The GA-486IM seems to be a good board for oldschool 486 projects: The UMC 8881 chipset was one of the latest PVI-style implementations and is supposed to have PCI 2.1 support.

I'm still trying to install a SB32 PnP CT3670 8MB but CTCM set it A280 E680, ICU says 200-27F conflict with 6200-627F which is in use with a PCI card
My SB32 is a 16bit ISA not a 8bit, what's the trouble ?

ICU often sees conflicts where there are none. What happens if you ignore it and manually set the standard values in ctpnp.cfg, then execute ctcm?

For my T2P4 :
It allways run at 83MHz since I got my K6-2 and I never had problem.

I discovered V.Control to set up refresh rate with my Voodoo4.

I've installed my SB Live! value CT4670 in its last PCI slot
I use it with kX Project's drivers
Its front out is routed to AWE32's line in
The contrary would be better with EMU8000 SPD/IF to SB Live! but my AWE32 is unmute under dos
I only know two dos program with native native SB Live! support: MPXPLAY and QuickView Pro

I wonder what to use in its last ISA slot, maybe a GUS but it's hard to find today.

For my GA-486IM :
I solved the problem with ICU, inverting my NIC and my MilleniumII.
I have to use both ICU and CTCM to setup IDE on my SB32.

ICU does not set up sound, it sees confilct between 220 and 620
CTCM does not set up IDE and game it they were not previously configured

Are there any other ISA PnP tools which can be run in config.sys to replace ICU ?
If I install another PCI card, with ICU the problem will be back.

I'm still wondering what to use in its two free PCI slot, one support 2.1.

StickByDos, for v4 - try this:
http://cp.people.overclockers.ru/cgi-bin/dl.p … e=spbiosb03.rar
Modified bios with internal overclocking menu!
I use it - very nice 😀

!IMPORTANT!
If you flash this bios - after flashing, during first boot press f2 in videoadapter screen - this save default settings in cmos (yes, this bios save their setting in cmos like mb bios). After that you may "play" with tweak settings.

I've just flashed this bios, thanks.

If I don't go through its setup, my computer crash, displaying some weird things, leaving the video bios screan.

I think it's while returning to a normal text mode after displaying the 3dfx logo.

For SB Live! I replace kX Project with AudioHQ
Front speaker are still routed to AWE32, I add a pair of rear speaker
My front speaker are crap compared to rear but they are conncted to the PSU so I don't have to switch them on/off separatly

I got a bootable SCSI controler Advansys based on chip ASC3050B but it don't work with 83MHz fsb maybe I'll installed it on the 486, I also got an IBM 4.3GB SCSI HD

I got back the 386SX which make me discover PC's world
Mobo: Forcom M396, I've just installed 16MB ram, it previously had 2MB
CPU 386SX 25MHz (It is soldered) + empty FPU socket
Gfx: Trident 9000C 512kB VESA 1.2 bios
In 640x480 256c it work better with its bios than with its drivers
I also have an ARCHE VGA 256kB based on CL-GD 510/520 which has switch to emulate CGA HGC EGA
SoundBlaster 2 CT1350B
Its PSU is too much noisy
I added:
NIC 3C509B-TPO
SCSI AHA-1520B

Yeah, with 83 MHz FSB your PCI clock is 41.5 MHz, which is way out of spec. SCSI controllers are among the first to give up at such high clocks...

Tried UniVBE? Not that it would help much... 🤣
There was only one good thing about the Trident cards - they brought VGA to the masses, usually combined with a monochrome monitor 🙄

Now that sounds interesting - might be a good card for very old games.

I discovered my 386sx doesn't have POPAD bug (it's an Intel)

For the hardware clock of my 486, this problem is known as 2094 bug: Award BIOS's made between 04/26/94 and 05/31/95 set the date to 2094 at startup if it is between 00-93, I have to set the date after each boot

EDIT:
The hardware clock bug is now solved:
I flashed a bios for ALIC 486UP (in GA-486IM), it works and adds support for 4 EIDE

In 486:
I replaced SB32 PnP with AWE32 CT2760 dsp4.13
Its mpu401 is buggy but since it is not PnP, it give me less headache to configure
I also loose the 2nd ide controler since it is a multi cd
I now need a 2nd midi db for it

On 486:
I have finally found a bios for GA-486IM with 2097 bug fixed
PCI IRQ don't work correctly with this mb

With ALIC bios, irq weren't assigned correctly, win98 was always complaing pci card don't get irq from bios and pci nic only worked when it was initialised with dos drivers with resources, normaly autodetected, passed as parameters.

I have tried usb2 Zioncom Uc 0401, It didn't work with alic bios, with new bios it work, win98 complains it only get 1 irq instead of 2 but I managed to use an usb pen with win98 or under dos with Motto Hairu drivers and an usb ethernet nic Belkin F5D5050 with win98 and linux

AdvanSys SCSI doesn't work, it crash during post. With alic bios, it worked but crashed when I tried to load its driver.

On 386:
Sometimes it crashed when initialising isa cards
When initialising bios for scsi (AHA-1520B) or when initialising driver for nic (3C509B-TPO).
They are both PnP cards which I disabled PnP.

I replaced SB2 with SB16 CT2290 (with asp socketed), I think SBpro would be better for 386 games since stereo doesn't work on the same way on the two cards.
There is a bug with inverted stereo with the first SBpro but I don't know if it were corrected before or after opl3 introduction.

I'm looking for ET4000 since everybody say it is the best isa gfx card, do they come only with 1MB ?
With its Trident, there is bug with icons and cursors drawing in 256 colors.

It has a turbo switch for selecting 25MHz/8MHz which work even in PMODE but Ctrl+Alt+Del seems to work only in RMODE.

Most of them, yes, because the the "classic" Tseng ET4000AX chip can't address more than 1MB. There are also newer ISA cards with all variants of the ET4000 W32(i/p) chip, which don't have the 1MB memory limit and offer additional 2D acceleration functions.

I upgraded my 386SX:

I'm waiting for an isa Tseng ET4000AX 1MB I've ordered

I got an fpu: IIT 3C87SX, I removed it from a broken 25MHz 386SL laptop and I discovered it's a 33MHz one thus it is underclocked.

I exchange scsi AHA-1520B with AHA-1542CP, dma transfert speed set to 5.7MB/sec

In the space there was an HD conner CP3111 110MB, I installed 2 IBM HD 2.1GB and 4.3GB

My 486's monitor died last week and my 386's monitor can't work more than 3hr/day after display becomes lighter and blurry.

I connected my 386 to a 15in TFT NEC MultiSync LCD1560NX. It correctly displays vga but I have to center display everytime I switch between text mode and vga, in text mode it is shifted to left and in vga to right.

I've just got a Voodoo5 PCI MAC.

I've successfully converted it to a PC one and installed it in my K6-2, connected to my TFT monitor throught their DVI ports.

I also have a burnt V5 PCI and I saw on some 3dfx forum, it was discovered how to mod V4 agp 32MB -> 64MB.
I'd like to remove memory chips from my burnt V5 and soldered them on my V5MAC to mod it 64MB -> 128MB but I fear to loose it since this is experimental.

I updated my specs

I'd like to build a 440BX rig, I have lots of spare piece but I'm lacking of room

I'm still looking for its mobo but I have some CPUs:
P2 266MHz, P2 350MHz and Celeron 266MHz (no L2 cache)
I'd like a P3 with Slotket to make it between my K6-2 and my main rig (Athlon64 3200+ Newcastle with ASUS K8N-E deluxe)

Unused AGP cards:
Elsa Gladiac MX: GeForce2 MX 32MB Vesa 3 32kB bios
Leadtek Winfast Titanium: GeForce2 TI 64MB Vesa 3 49kB bios
I can install my V2 SLI
