Your system's wiring is not so bad actually. 😀

The PSU-unit box is taking way too much of space. I also believe a case outlet fan will be useful. Though older systems do not produce as much heat as those of today's, I like ventilating my machine as much as possible while trying to keep the fan noises at minimum possible. 😁

And finally, I guess the cards should be dusted off. The Voodoo3 is quite err.. dusty. 😜

EDIT:And, uh, is the benchmarking software you used a freeware? If yes, where to get it? I would like to test my classic system.

Thanks!

also there is a slight change... I now use a CT1740 SB16 (thanks amigaz!) and a DB50XG daughterboard 😁

also installed are a PCI network adapter and a USB2 card (for easy exchange of files from win98SE)

NOTE: here is a generic USB MASS STORAGE driver for win98, it works PERFECT and is very handy! http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

Err...I couldn't see the similarity between the full size ISA card and a full tower
Or am I missing something? 😕

today I tried to play Blood2 that I recently got from eBay...
I saw on the back of the CD case, it had an AMD K6-II logo , so I assumed there are some optimizations 😀 (mind you I only tried v1.0 that installs for the CD, there are 2 patches to bump this to version 2.1)
After installation, I went to the gfx options, where suggestions for voodoo2 was to set at High Detail (what joy I thought, I have a voodoo3 and a K6-II) so I set at High Detail, 800x600 ... it was crap! choppy and jerky movement... going to 640x480 did not help, and selecting medium detail helped a little.. I remember I was playing this on my PII-400+voodooo2 (maybe sli too) back then and it was flawless! I am a little dissapointed now 🤣
off to try the patches now

edit:
OK, patches did not help 🤣 ... I am beginning to like the idea of turning this pc to a p2/400 one with a 440BX mobo...

Weird, you want me to try it on my K6 box, amigo?

why not? I used win89se, dx8 IIRC and an agp voodoo3/3000... 256MB ram and 450mhz cpu, plus ISA SB16...

edit: I see the latest v2.1 patch adds some more options, like single pass multitexturing... made the game better 😊 need to find how to show framerate

Blood 2 ran like crap on my 'fast' k6-2 system then too, though it wasn't until 2.1, 256mb RAM and a Geforce2 later in the same machine that it was smoothly playable. Similar setup, but 500mhz and had a Live 5.1 also so hardware accelleration may have helped there.
There's also a 3Dnow! optimized d3d.drv for Blood 2 out there somewhere, you could probably snag that.
Are you using third-party drivers? Try sticking with 3dfx's official drivers, as they're hand-optimized for performance including 3dnow! optimizations even.

The Pentium II equivalents do blow K6-2s out of the water BTW, but their high price wasn't really justified. 😉

I saw on a FAQ this:
Due to lack of hardware support from manufacturers, we were unable to finish the 3DNow patch for Blood 2. Hence we will not be able to release an AMD 3Dnow! Blood 2 patch.

yet it worths to seek this d3d.drv you mention leileilol , thanks for the tip!
I am using amigamerlin drivers btw...

edit: found console commands:

dynamiclight (0,1) - toggles dynamic lighting. Turning off results in a speed increase.
drawmodels (0,1) - toggles model rendering. Basically makes models invisible.
drawparticles (0,1) - toggles particle drawing. Turning off results in a speed increase.
fastlight (0,1) - toggles fast dynamic light rendering. Faster but less visual quality.
lightmap (0,1) - toggles light mapping. BIG performance increase when disabled.
lightmodels (0,1) - toggles models being lit my dynamic lights.
showfullbritemodels (0,1) - renders models with fully brightened textures.
showframerate (0,1) - activates the continuous frame rate counter. Press shift+console to bring the counter up on screen. Press ctrl+console to remove it.
triplebuffer (0,1) - toggle triple buffering. May bring your card a big speed increase.
wireframe (0,1) - activates wire frame rendering. Not very useful.

I get 15-25 fps 🙁 not very nice 🤣

Just tried Blood2 with the Nightmare addon on my K6-III+ box.
Ran it thru my Voodoo2 in 800x600 16bit, in my opinion it runs smooth but don't know how many fps since I can't find a way to tell how many fps it's running at

Edit:

Also tested it on my Pentium Pro system, wasn't a success 🤐 as expected..dual Voodoo 2's didn't help

What disturbs me about K6-III+ is that at 600 MHz it is still slower than a P3-450 for Unreal Tournament. I basically ran those side by side and the P3 was smoother.

I'm not sure if it's all the CPU's fault or if one can also fault the horrible Super 7 memory/cache subsystem and AGP support. It probably all adds up. I was using a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP.

🤣 with Blood it was 3DFX, with Blood 2 it's AMD, damn! Monolith always blaming someone why their code doesn't get finished!

My first computer was a K6-2 500MHz with 64MB & later on a PCI TNT card to replace my onboard AGP, funny it was onboard AGP yet there was no port. I loved it though, it was my baby. I can even say I got a chance to use Napster on it just before they went under!

I never tried Blood 2 but NFS4 run fine at 640x480 with low settings if that helps.

Win98 Gold: 1GHz PIII - GeForce2 - Voodoo2 - 768MB - SCSI 😀
