Got this Asus dual socket 8 system for free along with my Compaq Proliant 5000 because the seller accidently damaged it's front bezel when he packed the unit. for shipping.

a4fc9539604935.gif

It came with two 166mhz 512k Pentium Pro cpu's, 2.1gig IDE HDD, 40x IDE CD-ROM, Asus Symbios chip based UW SCSI controller, special Asus media bus ATI Mach64 gfx card combined with a Vibra 16C sound card, RTL 8139 NIC, 128mb EDO RAM

I've since the upgraded the system with these parts:

- 2 x Pentium Pro 1mb cache model
- 2x new old stock socket 8 heatsinks
- maxed out the RAM with 8x64mb 60ns EDO RAM to a total of 512mb
- Fujitsu Siemens 36.7gig 10k RPM 8mb cache U160 SCSI hard drive
- Yamaha SW60XG GM/XG Midi card

Planned upgrades are to hook up the cd-rom to the SCSI chain with an acard IDE--> UWSCSI adapter.
Install a Gravis Ultrasound Max sound card.
Instal a Voodoo 2 gfx card for some 3d game support 😀
Mkght install an UWSCSI Raid controller..and hook up two 36.7gig drives in RAID 0 but I think that would be overkill for this slow system.

Currently running Windows NT4 server and Windows 98SE in dual boot with Acronis OS Selector.

Mostly using this rig for newer DOS games...what I've noticed is that quite alot of games doesn't want to run on dual socket 8 systems...Pinball Fantasies is a prime example...runs flawlessly on my Soltek and Asus single socket 8 systems.

Some more pr0n pics from my setup 😁

May I ask how the hell you got the 1MB Pentium Pros working in that board? I am pretty sure I had that exact setup, and I could not get the two to work together. I read several places on the internet saying there was a BIOS incompatibility.

Simple...I popped out the old cpu's and popped in these 😁
Not eve running the latest BIOS yet but plan to upgrade soon...

well..actually I ran into troubles...system would boot aftet the upgrade but it had nothing to do with the cpu's...I had to clean the CPU card contacts with some good old CRC Eletronic Cleaner

The made one for dual socket 7 and dual slot 1 cpu's too for this motherboard but they are very rare..

I recently sold my board and daughter card for $30. I friend of mine has the same board and card and would like to sell for the same price. If anyone is interested, please contact me by PM.

Wow yeah that daughtercard is interesting alright. I suppose they had to make space somewhere for all those chips, huh? 😀

Is anyone running a 450KX / GX mobo?

It's a monster....of noise, 🤣

I've started replacing the fans inside it with Noctua fans...but sadly the PSU has died on me 🙁

Anyway..here's my Compaq Proliant pr0n gallery

ooo pretty. so you needed to wear hearing protection when running that machine? 😀

Finally found a photo of the Intel Performance/AU (Aurora) mobo. Looks reminiscent of the newer VS440FX, but has the older (but more beefy in some ways) 450KX chipset. It's fairly obvious why they wanted to simplify that chipset... look at all the chips! That and there isn't room for the 4th ISA slot.

Damn....they really bombared the mobo with those chips 😳
Same fat chips I have on my Proliant mobo but they look dwarfed on it 😀

Wouldn't say no to this mobo though *drooling*

I just love that skyscraper of a long, tall tower! I have a "fairly tall" old box with a pedestal base under it that reminded me of IBM's PS/2 Model 80, but it's shorter than that Compaq's box by at least a couple of 5 1/4 drives' worth. I have just three bays on top for optical drives, then two exterior and two interior bays for 3 1/2s, but that much only takes up somewhat more than the top half of the case.

Without the pedestal, it's dangerously top-heavy and precariously balanced. Mine had really terrible ventilation, also, and I modified both the bezel and the left side access panel to improve air flow. It presently has a Socket 7 Asus P5A in it, but I may give up on that one eventually.

(No, I haven't taken any digital photos I could include, sorry!)
