Not really "retro" but I had fun repairing this early Athlon 64 machine this weekend. My dad had been using it for years until some capacitors on the MB let their insides escape. It also had a Deathstar 60GXP that had finally started with the click of death. New board (Asus K8V-X), new WD HDD and a new PSU did the trick. The case is an Antec Sonata and was a dream to work inside compared to my Socket 7 AT machine.

Here is my two 386 computer that was made before I was born.

IBM PS/2 Model 35SX
Saved from junk yard before it going to be recycled, the keyboard and monitor is found near this machine but the keyboard cable is being cutoff 😒 so just disassembled some cheap PS/2 keyboard and solder some wires, The mouse I have found before I brought this about 1 or 2 years ago form second hands computer store.

From the software in HHD, this machine is for storing order information of an garment export company, there is even full Clipper source code of one of software that use on this machine! I have made image of HHD, delete some unused files and put some stuff in there. Currently this machine is not use, because I have to cleanup my home for more space to put this machine on a desk.

CPU: 80386SX 20Mhz
RAM: 2Mb
HHD: 40Mb
FFD: 2.88Mb 3.5" (replace from original broken 1.44Mb 3.5" FFD)
BUS: ISA
Cards:

  • 3C509B-TPO Network Card (Original it have NE-2000 but the card have only coaxial)

Monitor: IBM Monochrome Display (VGA)
OS: PC-DOS 5.0
With Model M keyboard and IBM PS/2 mouse!

Todo: Add more RAM, Math-co, fix the monitor.

KOMPASS PC (C&T386)
Found at same junk yard less than months after I found above machine, originaly have ET-3000AX, 1.44Mb 3.5" and 1.2Mb 5.25" FFD, no Hard drive, 8bit I/O card and CCAT200A IDE/FFD controller, 1MB RAM in 256Kb SIMM like this http://imgur.com/B9clkBE and no Math-co. Firstly this machine won't boot but the problem was quickly identify, cause by 8bit I/O card. after I remove the card, this machine boot!

After I have this PC for a while, I have hacked it to add more RAM from 1Mb to 4 Mb http://encharrneer.tumblr.com/post/59659807361, change from slow IDE to more faster SCSI add CD-ROM, sound card, network etc.

Currently I use this PC for gaming some old DOS games that don't require mouse, test software that I write and compile on DOSBox and do some cool thing.

CPU: 80386DX 20Mhz with ULSI Math-Co US83C87 33 MHz
RAM: 4Mb, 0 wait state, parity
HHD: IBM WDS-3160S 160Mb SCSI
FFD: 1.44Mb 3.5" and 1.2Mb 5.25"
CD-ROM: IBM SCSI 4x CDROM
BUS: ISA
Cards:

OS: MS-DOS 6.22 Thai Edition, Windows for Workgroup 3.11 Thai Edition (will change to FreeDOS soon)

Todo: find I/O card that work with this machine or make one my self, find a way to add mouse to this machine if I/O card cause problem, add 4 of 1Mb stick simm RAM, reverse engineer the reverse ISA ram expansion slot for more RAM (8Mb), Mod ATX PSU in to this PC.

Not exactly a rig, yet some stuff I'm putting together:

Acer AP43 (often called "Aopen AP43") motherboard
AMD 5x86-133ADZ (works at 3x33, 3x40, 3x50, 4x33, 4x40)
512KB 15ns cache
64MB FPM RAM
Transcend 1GB Disk-On-Module

I do not rush and have a nice time building!

P.S. Wanted to add ET6000 videocard yet it shows rubbish instead of picture at least during POST. Going with S3 Trio64, not happy 🙁

Very nice hardware, that's a whole lot of RAM for that era system! What OS are you thinking of running?

Regarding the videocard, I wouldn't be too upset about the ET6000 not working, it's a fast chipset but not the best looking. Do you have a Matrox Millennium or Mystique? They're at least as fast and provide the better image quality than the Tseng.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

Thank you 😀 I'm going to run Windows 3.1 on it, Windows 9x is everywhere on my machines 😁

Regarding the videocard, I have Athena, Mystique and Millenium II. I wanted something more period-correct and ET6000 seemed a perfect choice. Now I will have to go with Mystique or Athena, though Athena is known to be very slow in DOS.

There's a funny thing about the board, it bears Aopen logo and Acer part numbers. Manufacture date is 1995, yet it was not until December 1996 that Aopen was incorporated.

Fair use/fair dealing exception

I recently found this sweet SEANIX case for $4 so I decided to put my 440LX board in it to build a pure DOS PII system.

I have so far tested it with a PII-233 and CF to IDE adapter, 2XDVD ROM drives, 2X1.44MB floppy drives (both are functional).

It has onboard Yamaha OPL chip for SB/Adlib/SB PRO. I also had a General Midi/OPL-4 add on card that fit on the 440LX chipset board.

I like the yamaha chips because I don't have to load any TSR's.

I quickly found out that old Sierra games don't run very well on this system so far...I expected this, but I was hoping to at least get some older games going.

A lot of Lucasarts games like Dark Forces runs great.

I have not done too much more testing.

The video card is an NVidia Vanta.

That's what the add-in board looks like! I've been looking for info on it for ages!

Yes, I remember seeing your post about that on another topic, but I couldn't remember what topic it was.

I believe the sockets for this are found on 440FX and 440LX boards, I have not seen it on any others, but I'm not 100% sure.

I was lucky to find this one in a Dell OEM system.

I can't for the life of me find one on eBay though...I think they are getting a bit rare these days. I love the onboard native OPL-4 that this affords.

I found a few pictures of old rigs on my hard drive so I thought I would post them here...

I had this one briefly probably around 2001, no idea about the brand of the case but I remember it was really, really heavy. It might probably have been home to a Gigabyte GA-7ZXR with an Athlon 1300. The Philips CD Burner was awful and was making me waste a lot of CD-R discs due to failed copies. And it wouldn't even read some CD-Roms. The HDD was installed in a rack for some reason, no idea why I did that. Sold it for cheap years ago.

SQZSIJj.jpg

This one on the other hand was my very first XP system. I think I got it around 2002, it housed an ASUS P4G8X with a P4 2.8ghz, probably an Elsa Gladiac 920 Geforce 3 and a Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum Ex. Case was an Antec 1080 or maybe a copy made by Chieftec or some other brand. Again, it was really heavy, and made of much thicker metal than the average case we find these days. Apart from the weight the other negative thing about it was the HDD trays, they were really inconvenient to mount and unmount - you had to remove the video card every time. I remember playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein on this PC and kept getting BSODs on Windows XP, I was so upset because I didn't know where they were coming from. Later I learned about "Memtest" and found out there was a defective RAM stick, hence the errors...

These are pics I took just before selling it years ago, I no longer had the P4G8X but put a spare P4C800-ED and a Geforce FX5700 I had, removed the sound card and sold it for cheap... wish I kept it just for the case!
