This got me thinking again, what is a retro rig?
I've put together four 'old' machines recently.. 2 x PII Slot 1, a Celeron 433 Socket 370 and an Athlon Slot A all running Win98SE.
I've just dug up a Sempron 2300+ on a Biostar, installed XP and it still doesn't feel retro enough for me, even in an HP D530C case.
Planning to put the Asus P2B PIII 700, 3dfx V4500 in there instead.
Pre XP is retro for me, really.

That's the thing about 'early retro', isn't it. There has to be some sort of desirability other than Rare and Vintage, because those two take longer to build up. And nobody /ever/ desired a Sempron on a Biostar.

I have two of those boards. Because some unhappy day my desirable Socket A boards will wear out.

Lol wired how is that retro? 🤣

I have one of those machines set up almost exactly the same but I have Fedora 20 running on it and I use it for processing video. 🤣

Subjective too, to an extent.
I like the way things look as well, which is why I like Slot 1 and A.

Very nice collection. What kind of Sony CD-ROM do you have there on one of the towers? It looks like a 2X one a friend of mine had back in the day...he was the first one out of all my friends to get a CD-ROM and I thought that it would be forever before I could afford one, but of course three years later I had one finally when I got my IBM Aptiva for college.

I have to agree that that 386 slimline case one you have is very cool.

Is one of those Voodoo2s bent?

Slot CPUs are pretty cool I think. I want to replace my socket 370 setup with slot A or 1, but finding a cheap motherboard is a little tricky.

I already have a QDI P6I440BX B1S laying around. I love that board, but I feel like getting something different.

It does look a little bent in the photo I must admit.
I'll have another look tomorrow 😀

thanks 😀

that sony cd-rom is a funny thing. it doesn't have the ability to get the tray back in, if i press the button, the tray just pops out and i have to slide it out by myself to get a cd in there.
also it comes with an extra I/O card to which it is connected and it seems like it'd only work with this particular card.. 😀

@what is retro and what isn't:
for me, everything before XP and Pentium 4 is retro although I sometimes feel like I have to put a socket A machine together like one I had years ago (i had all Mainboards from KT133 to KT880, always assembled my PCs by myself).
At Win 3.1/DOS 6.22 and older things start to be ultra-retro for me 😁 (although i'm loving it).

As the title says, it doesn't have to be photos of retro rigs that we have on our own.
So, I'm totally friggin' excited that this weekend the pretty new ELMP has a free of charge exhibition that I'll attend!

It's actually a non-profit organization that was founded pretty recently, 2-3 years ago and is donation-based.
Nothing fancy, just a big room with some oooold working machines. 😀

Classic case that and a nice machine in general. I use that monitor too, very nice.

How goes the research into the Ebola virus? 🤣

Ah... 'Plasma'. On this machine it runs like a soothing lava lamp.
