um... no. the original of those had a monoural speaker out which was hooked to a special out on the sound card which would only produce output when there was nothing plugged into the output on the rear of the sound card. In my first post I had not yet realized the original sound card was replaced/removed.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if it was a IN or an OUT port. I'll post a picture of the ESS Audiodrive and show where I think it was plugged in, just to make sure.

And the sound card isn't the only thing that's been replaced. Other things that have been replaced are:

Video card
Floppy drive
CPU
PSU
RAM

It doesn't say if it's an in or an out. So I still don't know if it's supposed to be plugged there on the AWE64 Gold.

And behold my (modified) Packard Bell Platinum 2030!

Intel SE440BX motherboard (aka Packard Bell MediaBlaster)
Pentium III Katmai 450
192mb
ATI Rage 128 16mb
Sound Blaster Live!

What it originally had:

128mb
Pentium II Deschutes 450
Ati Xpert98 8MB
Aureal Vortex
Some modem card connected to the Vortex
No fan (My Compaq Deskpro originally had no fan as well)

Hello, first post here.

I just got a 486 PC which I am in the process of setting up for Windws 95 and DOS games.

This is the Picasa collection with pictures of it: https://picasaweb.google.com/1003929770413259 … 150/486Computer

Hello and welcome to the forum. You will find that 486s are quite popular around here. When I click your Picasa link, I get "Sorry, that page was not found."

Plan your life wisely, you'll be dead before you know it.

Yes, I don't know why, it happens now to me too if I'm not logged into Google, but the photo album is set to public... Sorry, I'll try to find out how can I fix that.

Edit: I see now, the nice people at Google are playing games... 🙁

New edit: the photo gallery for my 486 is world visible now, I guess that now that I'm using a fake name Google is happier than when I was using an invented name... Oh, well. 😁

This is my system I restored and built up a few years ago. Some of you may be able to shed some more light on the Fujitsu ICL line of computers, the brand of which which came and went pretty quickly in the mid 90's.

Sadly its not the original Fujitsu ICL that my parents bought for my brother way back in the mid 90's, maybe 1996 or 1995. The monitor, speakers and mouse are the original ones that have been in the family since then, though, so there's at least some sentimental value there, the rest is just nostalgic.

WP_000197.jpg

I've always really liked the case on these computers. Black computers were outnumbered greatly by beige boxes back in those days so this is sort of unusual in that respect.

The original Fujitsu ICL we had back then was a desktop type, rather than a tower and was very thick. I would hope to buy one again one day but seems unlikely as I can't even find a picture of one anywhere on the internet.

WP_000196.jpg

Keyboard sadly isn't the original one, which got lost a long time ago. But its the closest match I could find that didn't look too out of place.

WP_000203.jpg

Currently runs Windows 95. It's nice and fast but I only use it to play old games.

WP_000205.jpg

WP_000187.jpg

It runs a 120Mhz Pentium processor on a Jetway J542-B motherboard.
2x 16Mb SIMM's give plentiful RAM.
2GB HDD
CD-ROM Drive
3 1/2 Floppy Drive (I think it could well be original)
Sound Blaster 16 ISA sound
ATI Rage II+ 4Mb graphics card

Very nice!

In Europe we had ESCOM and they had black computers which looked very nice IMO.

No yellowed plastic there, cool!

Speaking of brands of PC that came and went quickly in the 90's - I was looking through a local computer magazine from 1994 recently and there was an ad in there for "CC's brand" computers. CC's as in the corn chip! The heading went something like "We've been providing Europe with more than just chippies".

Anyone see / own one of those?

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

Oh dear 2 posts in a row, what a narcissist.

I've been on a bit of a collecting drive lately and Gumtree, Freecycle, and Overclockers.net have produced the following for a grand total of 50 bucks:

A 486DX33 VLB, Opti chipset with some battery damage but nothing a good clean won't fix. The bloke selling it owned an old dress manufacturing factory which had been shut up for years, it was a like a dusty old museum. I love these old flip top cases and this one’s in great shape:

And I was happily surprised to find these lying around the factory too, along with some old CRT’s and Pentium 3 era stuff. I couldn’t fit the P3’s in the car, but I grabbed this lot – another 486 VLB machine, a socket 7, and a HP vectra:

A lovely bloke I met through freecycle has dropped the following off at my house with a promise of more to come – this beast of a P5-133:

2012-04-12131112.jpg

And this relatively uninteresting looking 486. This thing contained a PCI socket 3 which I’ve never come across before, but sadly the battery had leaked all over the place and killed it:

A nice bank of cache which I'll be able to use on something, so it's not a complete loss:
2012-04-12134837.jpg

And finally this nice little 486DLC machine I traded for an old Apple 2G. It’s an interesting motherboard, 2 VLB slots and can take a 386 or 486DLC. It has a math co-pro installed, I can’t image what I’d do with this apart from drop a 386 chip in there for the novelty of having a VLB 386 machine. I also received with this a cool little 386 laptop, but I haven’t gotten around to looking at that yet.

All told I have way too much of this era stuff now! I think it’s time for a ‘free to a good home’ ‘post on overclockers.

Wow fantastic haul!

Funny my ATX PSU in my Socket 7 time machine dies the other day, but the original one in my Acer 486 still works 😀

I believe it can also take a "regular" 486DX or DX2 on the socket where the coproccessor is installed right now. IIRC most of the VL-BUS 386 PCs sold back then, had the option to upgrade up to a 486DX2/66.

Reliving The Memories

I retired my Toshiba system and finally got a chance to build my dell system I ordered back in late summer 2000. It's a

PIII 933 Mhz
512MB RAM
20GB Drive
DVD-ROM
CD-RW
ZIP
Soundblaster
Geforce 2 MX
Harman Kardon HK 595 Speaker Set W/Sub.

Nice! Did you manage to find the exact same case again?
I would've rebuild my first system, if it weren't for the fact that I still have it 😜

It's the same series a Dimension 4100. I sold the system in 2001. Don't know what happened to it after that. This system I have now was turned in at an Ewaste event.
