Just remember those are K6-III+ chips and may not be recognized properly.
Also I understood some versions of ALI chipset didn't work properly with the + chips.

In the event that this is the case, what can be done about this? Do I need to flash the bios? I will tell you what make and model the board is tomorrow.

It's only the newest ALI chipsets that won't work with the mobiles. Frankly, of all ALI Super 7 boards I've come across, none were using that particular chipset...or maybe I just got lucky?
Afaik it will either not work, or very slowly. The good thing about that chipset though is it fixes a bug in the caching system where earlier chipsets could only cache up to 128MB (except if you used one of the chips with L2 cache that is).

VIA chipset boards should be good though, as should SiS.

What board "exactly" do you have?

I would agree with the earlier comments about k6-2. I have run K6-2 and P3 systems of the same speed. If all you're going to do is run office, you might not notice the difference between the two. But on something like video editing or rendering with POV-Ray, the K6-2 would take twice as long as a P3 (even a Katmai). People bought k6-2 because it was cheaper. Certainly better than a 233MMX pentium, but not as good as P3.

Wow, K6-3+ 570MHz!!! Drool, so cheap too!

I wonder how this benched against a 500MHz Katmai PIII?!?!

I'd recommend you get a couple of these, much better value for money 😉

Why deleted? This one's cheaper and from the same seller 🤣

I've found K6-3 is virtually impossible to find, but fortunately the K6-3+'s are all over the place!
The seller I linked to sells 400Mhz 1.6v ones and are brand new! I can recommend this seller, got a tray of processors from him, all NOS, all worked perfectly, and el cheapos! 😁
These are basically underclocked 550Mhz parts with a lowered standard voltage anyway, they should reach 550Mhz quite easily.

I used a K6-2 for a long time but if I'm going to build a system around a 600mhz CPU, I'd much rather it was a PIII or Athlon.

True, much easier and more practical (unless 600Mhz Socket 7 is what your whole point is 😜).
Though Slot A is really hard to find, Slot 1 is all over the place!

My whole point IS to have a fast socket 7. I have enough parts lying around to build a nice Slot 1 P3, I have a few 1Ghz P3's also. But this project is to get a great PC circa 1999 running with SS7 and AGP. All the parts going into the PC are the best of that period (of my opinion).

My P3 build will come later, and it will either be a vanilla 1Ghz or a 1.4Ghz Tua, with a Geforce 3 Ti500 or GF4 4800SE. I may even go for a dual CPU board, if I can find a new one for a decent price.

Well you want a Super 7 board with 2mb L2 then. One of those Epox MVP3 boards perhaps. That's as neat as they come IMO. 😉

However one that I've always wanted to try is the Aladdin 7 chipset with the ArtX IGP.

I have one of those Epox boards - it is good! Just my personal preference but I would be inclined to stay from Ali chipsets. Are they even around anymore? VIA is an established brand and has been around for a long time. I have used three different boards with the MVP3 chipset and all have worked flawlessly.

But I've used an ALI Super 7 board and it's worked flawless for me.
It appears though the VIA boards come with more then 512kb cache more often, but that doesn't matter too much for me as I'll be using L2 cache CPU's anyway.

Btw ncmark, which boards have you used?

Fic PA2013 Super 7 motherboard
with 2Mb of L2 cache

thats the board I have.

I installed one of the K6-III+ 400Mhz CPU's and the PC turns on, but at post it reports CPU at 16Mhz and hangs. It does not even start to count the RAM and I can't get into bios.

Anyone know what jumper settings I need to change to get this CPU to work?

I just took out the K6-2 500 and dropped in the K6-3+ 400.

HELP! 😁

It's ok men, I solved it. Rooting around google I found that the motherboard did indeed need a bios flash to support K62+ and K63+ CPU's.

After flashing I set the jumpers on the board to 2.2v (up from 2.0) and installed a decent Pentium 3 cooler from a p3-866 system I had lying around. I then set the frequency back to 100 and the multiplier to 5.5 (can't find the 6x setting, maybe there isn't one).

I downloaded the manual for the board and the PC booted fine.

3D-mark 2000 w/ K62-500 - 1792
3D-mark 2000 w/K63+550 - 2203

That rounds the system off nicely. Now I can strip it, clean it all and get to spraying the case. I'm going BMW sand orange, Plastikote Midnight Blue and a Renault Green interior (3dfx inspired). Also gonna dremel out 3Dfx on the side panel. 😜

Set the multi to 2x on the board, and the CPU will interpret it as 6x.

Thanks for that!

If anyone is interested, I did some rendering test with Pov-Ray. On the "biscuit" sample at 640x480:

1. A pentium 3 650 with coppermine core did in in 1 minute 46 seconds

2. A pentium 2 450 with katmai core did it in 2 minutes and 9 seconds

3. A k6-3 450 did it in 3 minutes and 5 seconds

Just ftr, the Pentium 2 450 uses Deschutes while the P3-450 uses Katmai. Apart from SSE and the serial number thingy the difference should be quite negligable though.
