I'am building a Retro 3dfx gaming machine era 1999/2000. The parts i choose will be the ultimate gaming machine which i couldn't afford back in these days. So everything is going to be top of the line 😁

So first my introduction video of the project where i show the hardware. And give more details over my system back in those days in the description.

Testbuild! It's much safer to test the hardware in a case then on my desk. For so far the setup is stable and with windows 2000 no errors.

But the build isn't cool without a great case! So my choice is the Aopen HQ45!! The most known ugly case ever! No cooling option allmost no hd bays.

Lets mod it!!

It will be a total rebuild 😁

I made this new HD rack. Its looks awesome and fill up the space in the front. There will be a big sidewindows to show all the epic expension cards

Custom front made of a top cover of a chieftec tower

Another youtube video where i show the start of the casemod! 😀

Lots of metal works for the new custom front.

Testfit 😁

The config for now 😁 (it will change but this is what i had in my mind for ths build)
Pentium3 500
Asus p3b-f
512mb pc133
20gb seagate
Matrox g400max
2x Voodoo2 Sli
3com 3c905b
Awe64 Gold isa

The OS is windows 2000 and i have Quake2 running (also played out the single player on this setup 😁 ) And offcourse Halflife1 The most Epic game ever!!

My god!
What a lot of work man!
And what a load of cooling in there!

I used to have 3 such cases. Tried to give em away for free...there were no takers 🤣

Thanx 😁

I only bought the Voodoo2 cards with cables for 25 euro and the motherboard cpu mem for 10 euro. The rest was for free 😁 I only paid shipping for the Matrox g400max and 3com card. So its a pretty cheap build! Even the AWE64 Gold was for free 😜

Yeah the Aopen case is so ugly that no one wants it haha.

Is there a better way to integrate the youtube clips on the forum?

Slot 1 and V2 SLI my favourite things!
I liked how you replaced the 1 fan and useless com port holes with 2 fans, I may have to “borrow” that idea from you.
I watched your 1st video, think I would keep things simple and stay with IDE, although as you’re going to be running Win2k and not Win98 like most maybe there is a performance gain to be had?

It’s a nice setup, not much different to how mine (hardware wise) stated out but had to get a 1GHz CPU and with that much power the TNT Pro gave way to a Gforce ti4600 goodbye period piece hello speed king-ish

You might want to reconsider improving that drive rack as the angle that the drives are mounted creates uneven wear on the drive spindles that will result in shorter life.

Yeah slot1 is Epic 😁
chinny22 you can use any idea what you like! But you must show it hahaha 😀 The raid plan is just because it can 😀 if i want real speed i game on my I7 with gtx570 😁. I choose the era 1999/2000 so i can have limited choice in my setup 😜 So no 2003 agp card for me 😀

The drives never wil be used for 24/7 and they all have fluid bearings so i think there won't be a problem. And someone is collecting more 40/80gb ide disks for me so i get enough spares 😀

Because the video links are a bit hidden between the pictures here the links!

I hate to see such drives go to waste that way as they are about the fastest ide drives that one can buy, I learned the hard way with one of those seagate drives and those low profile Maxtor drives that you have it is something you don't want to do. It doesn't matter much the bearing type. During the 80s and 90s they used to balance the entire spindle stack by using a screw that attacked to the cover but since the early 2000s they stopped. When the drive isn't setting flat with the label side up and at any odd angle or vertical the load on the spindle isn't evenly loaded. It causes uneven wear on the bearings and causes them to prematurely fail over a much shorter time than would be the norm and will slow the spindle over time so performance degrades as well.

I got the drives and the experience the hard way so just drill some extra holes then you won't have to bother replacing any for years if they are still in great shape.

nforce4max Maybe your right. it doesn't feel good to use the maxtors in this way. I getting more old harddrive so maybe i can test 1 (Not the fast maxtors) if it goes well.

Nice i found and installed SIN 😁 Quake2 based shooter 😀

Offcourse you wil benefit from faster P3 also from a faster videocard but i choose the 1999/2000 era and i will stick to that. I have also a pentium3 450 so if the case is finisht i gonna overclock and see which is the best cpu 😁

I never been a fan of windows 98se. Which mods do you use?

I also use Kernel Ex as well as unofficial Service packs i also use a Microsoft wifi card with MS wifi software but, it only works with WEP.

Any reason you guys didn't get faster CPUs?
