A long time ago I entered on the Old world of computers, I was thinking what is the machine that will allow me to play almost all games since the start and till 2000, also, the project needed to be cheaper, so I thinked the best system would be a Socket 7 one.
Some time researching, I ended finding a badass case, it wasn't the same I wished, but it was almost perfect, and in NEW contidion!!!!
http://bimg2.mlstatic.com/gabinete-at-novo-na … 7623_072013.jpg (case image)
and it was cheaper 🤣 (plus with install manual), next pass would be get a motherboard, since most people would sell the motherboard with cpu + ram I would need to find some stuff, on my researching I ended up on a MS-5184, I thinked it was a fine motherboard, but I ended discovering that it had 1mb l2 cache + 786mb of ram support 😳 (but I still think mixing EDO + SDRAM may end bad), and the best part, super socket 7 !!! (It can update to a K6-III or K6-III+ with bios upgrade).
One cool think is that the motherboard jumpers are actually switches (kinda oldschool), the only problem with the mb, would be the clock display led, there's no support on the mb '-' (so it would be useless, but I ended up taking some energy from usb 2 port to at least make it on)....
I already had alot of sdram memory and hdds so it wasn't a problem for me, the next step: GPU,I tested my ati radeon 7200 and fx5500, but it ended up that the drivers was so heavy that I needed to get a gpu, since I didn't find none 3DFX voodoo 1 and 2 here, I got stucked with voodoo 3, and, it wasn't actually bad.
Finally, the most important part, the sound card, witch one should I get? I knew it should be sound blaster compatible, has opl3 and maybe some wavetable, looking around, I found a weird sound card that I never saw over internet, an Guillemot Maxi Sound Game Theater 64, and acording to reviews, it was actually better than a Sound Blaster AWE64 so gg $$$
The sound card was in good condition, and it came with the manual and even a pod game install with MAXI 5.1 sound support 😳 (it's just lame there wasn't a patch that had MAXI sound + Voodoo patch ...)

So I ended up with this config:
-128mb sdram
-3DFX VOODOO 3 3000 AGP http://i.imgur.com/9kSdT8c.jpg
-1 usb 2.0 pci with 5 usbs (1 inside that's being used to light up the clock display)
-2 usb 1.1 onboard (used for mouse and keyboard)
-Maxi Sound Game Theater 64 (4mb onboard wavetable) http://i.imgur.com/x8f6Y65.jpg
-MS-5184 motherboard http://i.imgur.com/IULDJtj.jpg
-80Gb seagate
-ATX psu (FSP250-60GTA)
-Pentium MMX 233MHz
-Aoc 4vn crt monitor (1024x768 max res) http://www.todomercado.com/tm/aviso/img_aviso … RDOPISCRAFT.jpg (example photo)

Here's the computer in action in some games/music : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2A7fqIF9Y8

PLUS: with all that adventure, I ended up making a text engine, and yes, it's for ms-dos 😁 (windows too and some kind of linux support)

Hi 😁
so I´m building an old computer, for now I only have the floppy disk, dvd-rom, hard disk, case, gpu, processor, memory, power supply and the motherboard.

The case is an generic case (Picture), but it really looks new 😳, the motherboard is still coming but it´s the Via Ms5184(Picture).
I even have 386mb sdram and since this motherboard support it, I may add it.
The gpu is an old Ati Radeon 7200, 233MHz pentium MMX, 64mb edo and for now no sound card =/

I still have some questions, what sound card should I buy? and it´s better buy an isa or pci sound card? the best ones that I found to sell was theses ones
1)Sound Blaster Awe64 Ct4380 Isa(Picture)
2)GUILLEMOT MAXI SOUND 64 GAME THEATER

Also about the gpu, this one would be good for that system?

Also, first post 😁

Welcome! Wow I like that case, you don't see new ones of those often these days.

Re the sound card / gpu - what games are we talking? And what OS?

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

I think the same thing about the case
on the first day I saw it to sell, I buy it without thinking, and wow, on the next day, the guy didnt even have more the 2 cases 😳

About the game, I would use windows 98, and something like dune 2, warcraft 2, doom and tomb raider 2 (maybe even some olders like alley cat *__*)

EDIT:so what would be the better sound card, the awe64 or the maxi sound? and the ati radeon 7200 wouldn´t be bad for a pentium mmx 233MHz?

I would imagine that the AWE64 is probably more compatible with older games. I certainly had no problem using AWE64 with DOS games back in the days. But that being said, if you already have the Guillemot Maxi Sound 64, I'd say try it out. It's a much more unusual card, and as such may be "cooler" than an average AWE64. If it runs with the games you want to play, then there's no problem.

WinXP : PIII 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 73GB SCSI HDD, Matrox Parhelia, SB Audigy 2.
Win98se : K6-3+ 500MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB HDD, Matrox Millennium G400 MAX, Voodoo 2, SW1000XG.
DOS6.22 : Intel DX4, 64MB RAM, 1.6GB HDD, Diamond Stealth64 DRAM, GUS 1MB, SB16.

That´s the problem xD
I don´t have the Guillemot, that´s why I´m curious a bout what should I select, Also it´s bigger and could expand to 18mb of SIMM (2mb onboard) and the awe64 only have 1mb '-'

According to the list in my signature The Guillemot MS 64 Game Theater soundcard is build around this chipset: ESS ES1868. This is a very easy chip to work with, compatible with Sound Blaster Pro. The music synthesizer is of the 'Dream' brand. In DOS you may not be able to get any uploaded soundfonts to work, but the 4MB fixed ROM patch set on the card is pretty good already.

Bad news, it looks like the mother board dislike the ati radeon 7200 =/ (1 long beep and 3 short beeps)
It´s strange, because the gpu is agp2x compatible :s

I´ll test the gpu on a newer system to check if it´s still working (I hope it´s, I love the ati radeon 7200)
if not I already found some cheaper gpus
-Trident Blade 3d :PCI
-Sis 6326 8mb Pci
-Trident 9680 2mb - Pci
-Nvidia Riva Tnt2 - Agp 32mb
-3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 16mb Agp (the most expensive, also with a cd driver)

I hope I could made that 7200 work =/

Weird news
It looks like the new gpu (nvidia FX5500) worked fine on it 😮.
The radeon 7200 was working but somehow this motherboard dislike it :s

I pluged all (hard disk, dvd drive, floppy) and it looks like it didn´t detected the dvd and the hd, well, I need to check the bios when I could control it with an usb drive (no at keyb here 😖)

EDIT: here are some screenshots of the case

The mobo with ati radeon 7200

Now all pluged in (DVD, flppy hd) and the fx5500

Just to compare
Sound Blaster AWE64:http://bimg2.mlstatic.com/placa-de-som-sound- … 6901_072013.jpg
Game Blaster 64:http://bimg2.mlstatic.com/placa-de-som-guille … 5066_102012.jpg

I really don´t think both will fit on that baby-at case =/

UPDATE2

finally I could install windows 98 \o/, too bad it only detected 39gb from 80 =/

Continuing, I put now the radeon 7200 gpu that is more older, but I´m having a weird problem (2 actually)
1)When I´m playing a game that uses 3D in some time the game will freeze (not even blue screen)
2)When I play a dvd with hardware acelerated, I get the same thing, the system freeze seconds after the video play...

So this could be the power supply (300WATTS), gpu, processor or the motherboard? D:

Also does tomb raider 2 is too slow on a pentium MMX 233MHz (I mean, it´s slow in most of big areas, even from the lowest resolution to the highest)

Last question, should I replace the thermal paste from the processor?

That´s all 😀

TR2 was released in 1997, the same year the Pentium MMX 233 was released. I'd guess it should be fine.
Keep in mind that the game enforces a 30fps limit, perhaps this is more noticeable in big areas. (I can't find a hot keys to display the frame rate, you might need FRAPS for this.)
It's also possible that the driver for the Radeon card is more CPU hungry than for example for a 3dfx card.

Perhaps one of the patches could help? http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tr2/fixes.html

So I got 10fps in any resolution on Lara's Home (without moving lara)
on software it´s playable at 320x200 and a high resolution (lower than 640x480), Should I install an older driver? (I think this one is from 2004 or 2005)

Also sometimes the system only show 254mb of ram and some times 384mb (there´re 128 and 256 dimm on it) is that related to bad contact? 😖

EDIT2:OMG downgraded the driver from 2005 to 2002, and, stucked at 30fps on tr2 😳 I´ll test more,...
EDIT3:3DMark99 old:(cpu:906, 3D:1541) now:(cpu:1166, 3D:1579)

Concerning the memory problem, are u sure the mainboard supports 256mb sdram dimms?
My socket super 7 mb with ali chipset only supports 128mb sdram dimms.

Acording to the manual yes.
It support the max 256mb of a single dimm and 128 from a single simm.

It looks like sometimes he detects just one memory slot (256mb) sometimes both (128+256) and sometimes it looks like it doesn´t detect no memory D:

Update:
it looks like there were a problem with The 256mb nem so ill only let 128mb for now.
I bought The game theather 64 but i couldnt start Windows =/. So i formated it and reinstalled it...
well at dos mode, The secret monkey island didnt get sound, doom too but it freeze when The demo map loads...
at Windows, doom got The snd effects and fm Music...

my problem now is when i installed The gpudriver it now freeze at detecting a new hardware D:
I dont know if its related to The fact that i didnt installed directx8.1 (i had one installer but it freeze at install '.'
also I post my working usb data storage driver D: ....

so what could be doing so many crashes at this system? :s

about The snd card The stock waverable is better than The Microsoft wavetable 😳

Finally It´s working \o/
The problem was the video driver that was installed and required directx8.1 while the computer was using an older version...

Video: working fine (Testing old drivers to see if it can increase the performance)
Ram:128mb for now (does it need more ? xD)
Sound:Fine (I liked the wavetable and even the ESS FM SYNTH, it´s much better then my last fm sound card).
Processor:Ok

for now it could run fine quake 2 at 1600x1200 (opengl) and +- zandronum (doom port) for now I only need to put back to work the usb storage >.<
Then I may rec some audio (Dream and ess fm), i´ll rec (the secret monkey island intro, finalboss.mid, dune2 intro, doom e3m8, doom e1m2, and another doom music :B)

EDIT:http://www.mediafire.com/download/mgy909p389h … _theather64.rar
The file has the ess fm and the dream wavetable of each music, only doom musics aren´t complete because i was recording directly from the game ( I didn´t have the mid file :s)
and wow, i didnt know an fm chip could have a good quality, and i didnt knew that 4mb was enough for a good wavetable 😳

So, I discovered why all that blue screen 😁
It's because one of the video drivers that I tested isn't 100% deleted =/, and that driver didn't work well, so I needed to use another one...
But the problem now is that every driver that I test fails because It may be using some parts of the old driver...

then, how can I really clean the vga drivers? I really don't want to format it again and install windows 98 D:

I dont thing that alley cat would run fine on that system.. Its to speedy for that system..Best system for that game would i prefer a 8088 or XT super turbo like a ST juko clone mothboard.
Otherwise a slow 8 / 10 mhz 286 system would do the job.

~ At least it can do black and white~
