I installed the Voodoo 3 graphics card and tested it, It's working fine. I thought the 3Dfx control panel would tell me the model number of the card but it does not, although it does tell me the speed it is running. I can confirm it is a Compaq Voodoo3 3500 TV-OUT running at 183-MHz http://www.hw-museum.cz/view-vga.php?vgaID=35. The BIOS on the card is 2.15.05 and as far as I can tell it is the latest version for this particular card.

I am using the latest 3Dfx official drivers 1.07.00 from http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo3.htm
I am also using the Official 3dfx OverClocking Tab (actually using to underclock) from http://www.falconfly.de/tools.htm

I would recommend this card to anyone wanting to build a late 90's gaming machine.

This is where I got mine

Edit: Just in case you did not read the post when I received the card I wanted to make sure to include this here. The card is still factory sealed in it's Compaq static bag and cardboard box. Just wanted to make sure you know it is 100% NOS because I know that is important to me at least on some hardware.

Yeah I think it was a Compaq only OEM part. I had never seen it either, that's why I thought it was going to turn out being a 2000 or 3000 but the seller was correct.

Well I decided to replace the Ensoniq AudioPCI with a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. Windows sounds great but the MIDI (DOOM) is nowhere near as nice as the Ensoniq AudioPCI with the 8MB waveset loaded. The Santa Cruz supports loading dls sound fonts but I have no idea where to find a good set to load. Oh well.

I definitely made the right decision with the Voodoo 3 video card. It looks great, plenty fast, glide and DirectX in one package.

I have been extremely busy but I did have a few moments to load Thief: The Dark Project. Sensaura sounded great on the Santa Cruz and the graphics looked much better than I remember from the old days on a Voodoo 2.

I pulled a huge haul cleaning a customers shed out lately and I have not had time to go through it thoroughly but definitely got a 19", 21", and several other CRT's in working order, even have an old Princeton. Two Asus slot-1 boards, slockets, PGA P3 CPU's, AT/XT mechanical keyboards, and a few video cards.

Definitely keep the partition under the 64GB limit, otherwise scandisk will have trouble with it. I resized the partition with a Linux live CD to 65536MB and scandisk had no more problems.

What, if any, Windows 98 SE updates are you guys installing and why? I have installed none so far. Security is not an issue as the box has no networking and I do not intend to install a NIC or modem.

I've been doing the Unofficial 98SE Service Pack 2.1a for a while but I just noticed 3.0 is done. I don't have a specific reason -- I just put some trust in people who are more obsessed with these things than me. 😉

The only update I do for 98SE is the MS Security Essentials 2004 pack. Oh, and I add the usb flash drive set.

I actually have 2 of those Compaq voodoo3's. Runs at 183MHz like the 3500s, just no TV tuner. Ridiculously fast card, I just wish they made 32mb versions, otherwise I wouldn't have a single TNT2 in my inventory.

So many combinations to make, so few cases to put them in.
