C2Q huh? Stuff from 5-6 years ago is enough for almost anything, even some of the latest games. Here's my previous main rig from 2009-10, which my X79 build earlier replaced. At the time I was really into AMD so I built an AM3 system. I kept upgrading it over the years so it's pretty up to date actually. These days its a backup system, but I would never get rid of it.

Specs are:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P
CPU: Phenom II 955 @ 3.8ghz, 2600mhz northbridge
Ram: 4gb OCZ SLI DDR2
Video: Asus GTX460 1gb TOP
Sound: onboard Realtek ALC889A
Drives: Samsung 840EVO SSD boot drive, 4x 1TB WD Blue storage drives in raid 10
Optical: LG 22x DVD-RW (IDE)
Case: Gigabyte Sumo
Cooling: Cooler Master TPC812
PSU: Corsair TX650
OS: Win 10 64bit
and a Sony floppy drive!

Nice stuff ! Completely up my alley !

Games all come down to the videocard you're running. My C2Q takes on everything you throw at it because of the overclocked R9 290 card in it. In 1080P there's isn't a single title that doesn't run smooth with max visuals and moderate AA.

Thanks. The GTX460 is there for nostalgia and also because this old case can't fit in the mega sized cards of today. Here's another shot of the old girl showing the drive bays behind the aluminum door. The Cooler Master HDD cage has another 12cm fan which brings the total number of fans in this case to 4 12cm fans. Thanks to this, the massive cpu cooler and 80mm GPU fan, even though this system is quite clocked, it is whisper silent at full load.

I also have a Core 2 system. But it's not crazily specced or anything. I use it for Win XP gaming and Linux distro testing, and all parts on it are from 2008.

Yes, it is. All the fans have blue LEDs, the front panel and there are hidden LED strips installed as well by me. So, it gets quite bright when switched on.

You got 2 HD's and still room for an optical drive in that guy? Interesting. What you might be able to do is pull out the optical drive and insert 2.5" drive cage in its place and have 3 hd's in it. Nice specs by the way, does it run cool?

The video card runs really cool (65-66c tops) but the cpu can go up to 84-85c when it turbos to 3.5ghz. It has two 2.5" drive bays an one m2 slot witch you theoretically can't use with the 2nd hdd installed, but you can get around that if you use a slim 2.5" ssd in said bay. I've had it since december 2014 and overall I'm pretty happy with it. It's also really quiet under load when the fans go to 3000 rpm.

I do have an optical drive bay hdd adapter for it but I use the odd quite a lot for burning cd's and blu-ray's so I bought an external 2.5" usb3 2tb hdd for extra storage.

Here are some updated ones, my setup has changed quite a bit as I've been upgrading it a lot. Hoping to get a new CPU soon. For now it plays gta 5 fine at medium settings, so thats good. A lot of the parts (case, ODD, one HDD, etc) are from older builds. I did add a 1TB hdd (halfway used already) and she's running windows 7 Ultimate x64 now. I love it!

An older HP xw4600 'workstation'

I got it second hand for free, it was lacking most parts though, including the side panel. Luckily I found one.

Quirks,
-Very picky with RAM, unclear if it can take a maximum of 8 or 16 GB,
-Despite having two PCIe x16 slots, it is not capable of SLI or Crossfire.
-Despite being made in around 2009 or so it still has PCIe 1.1, this imposses some limitation on my GPU.

Are you sure it's PCI-e 1.1? I have an xw4600 motherboard in my main gaming system, and I'm pretty certain it's PCI-e 2.0. The motherboard is X38 chipset based, which uses PCI-e 2.0.

It's unusual in using DDR2; most X38 motherboards used DDR3, although the chipset does support DDR2, including ECC DDR2. I've never seen any confirmation of anyone using 16GB. It may be DDR2 is limited to 8GB, and DDR3 to 16GB.

The motherboard is also ridiculously picky about PSUs - many will not even power it up due to timing issues.

The real pity is that the BIOS is broken, and vt-d doesn't work on it, otherwise it would be a truly excellent base for a Core 2 system.

My main system uses the S3210 chipset, which is based on X38. That definitely does use PCI-e 1.1 for no reason I can see - it's very annoying.

My 'current' PC is a 12 year old Dell Dimension 4200:

- Mini-tower case (very noisy when using an optical drive)
- Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz
- 1Gb RAM
- 2x 80Gb PATA harddisk, Windows XP Home SP3/Free-BSD 9.3 dual boot
- LG DVD-ROM drive
- OEM DVD writer (don't know what make, don't care, I never use it)
- Nvidia GeForce FX5200 AGP video card, which supposedly didn't support dual monitors, but with a driver update does support dual monitors (VGA + DVI)
- Creative Labs AudioPCI (need to sort out stupid XP drivers that don't support the Wavetable...)
- Unknown, unused WIFI card
- unused ADSL PCI modem
- The external drive on top of it is a old 60Gb IBM Deskstar (not one of the self-killing ones) in a USB-enclosure

This is mostly a work machine, I have very few games installed on it. On the other hand, Adobe Creative Suite CS2, Office, 3D CAD software, XML editors, etc. Basically my back-up machine for when there's a network problem at work.

I might add a SATA expansion card, as the motherboard has a stupid problem where if you enable SATA the OS needs to be located on the SATA drive...maybe also add Gigabit LAN, as the on-board NIC is a bit flaky at times (its DHCP renewal is very slow). On the other hand, why bother...

Here is my current "daily driver" PC, the only PC in my house at the moment too. It's an old build from 2007 with various changes since then. It's my second most recent machine, the other one being an Athlon X4 860k-based box; I've actually never owned anything Intel newer than s775 😁

- Case: CoolerMaster Elite 330
- MB: ASUS P5KC
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz (no o/c)
- RAM: 8GB DDR2-800 CL5 (2x2gb A-Data Extreme, 2x2gb Geil Black Dragon)
- VGA: Point of View 8800GT 512mb w/ Arctic Accelero L2 Plus cooler
- HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA050 500GB (32mb cache/7200rpm)
- ODD: 2x LG GH20NP22 Super Multi DVD±RW (black)
- Sound: Native Instruments Audio Kontrol-1
- OS: MacOS X 10.6.8 / Windows 7 dual boot (two 250gb partitions)
- Misc:

  • Generic Renesas USB 3.0 card
    3.5" flash/smartcard reader
OSX compatible Cambridge Bluetooth 2.0 adapter
OSX compatible Broadcom BCM4329 wireless adapter
Samson Graphite M25 USB MIDI controller
External Toshiba USB3 HDD for samples
Apple Keyboard A1048 (gets dirty easily)
    Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse
Samsung SyncMaster S22A300 Monitor (21.5" LED Full HD)

(original build was along the lines of C2D E6550 @ 2.33ghz, 2x1gb ram, one dvdrw, 6600gt->gigabyte gt210, 320gb hdd)

P5KC latest BIOS doesn't support AHCI, flashed a modified one, however it won't see more than one HDD on the SATA bus when AHCI is enabled. Went for Snow Leopard hackintosh since it's the only OS to run Logic 9 without the infamous UI lag issue and my interface with no glitches when playing system sounds (Native Instruments' drivers and support for this particular product was notably crap). Downsides: 1) I had to install older versions of several audio units, 2) Snow Leopard doesn't have native USB3 support, so provided that you install a kext for the USB 3.0 card, it runs the external HDD at high speed (USB2.0) instead. Windows 7 had already proved to be very stable for Cubase work. P5KC is very picky with DDR3 sticks and supports only up to 4GB of it as far as I know, so I decided to go with the maximum supported 8GB of (now pricey) DDR2.

Albeit old, it's fine to use for casual web browsing, quickly writing down some musical ideas or the occasional Wipeout 3 SE race on ePSXe 😀

My Current PC was built in November 2015. The pictures here were taken June 2016.

That's an Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 144Hz 1440p IPS monitor. The other two are just regular 23" 1080p 60Hz LED monitors.

Look at all dem drives, bro!

DSC00606_zpsmpqkxkg6.jpg

That's my whole case, the Antec 1200. This is the version 1, so it has USB 2.0 ports on the top. It had my old PC in it, so for this build, I swapped out the USB 62-in-1 card reader for a 2-port USB 3.0 bay. Had to modify the screw holes for the rear fans a bit so the radiator would fit, but I got it to fit (just barely). That radiator is mounted TIGHT and has full push-pull air movement.

System Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0 GHz unlocked Skylake quad-core
Cooler: Corsair H100i liquid cooling system
RAM: 16GB (8GBx2) DDR4-3200 Memory
Motherboard: MSI Z170A Gaming M7
Graphics: MSI nVidia GeForce GTX 980Ti 6GB
Power: eVGA 1000-watt fully modular
Boot Drive: Samsung SM951 256GB m.2 PCI-Express 3.0 x4 (running AHCI, unfortunately) with Windows 10 installed
2nd Drive: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SATA SSD (expensive, but worth it. This is my STEAM and most games drive.)
3rd Drive: Seagate 3TB 7,200RPM SATA (has my user profile folders, system backups of C:, iTunes library including movies, etc.)
Optical: LG Blu-Ray RW SATA
Operating System: Windows 10 Home

Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse USB
Keyboard: Belkin n52te
Mouse: Logitech M510
Gamepad: Logitech F310
Speakers: Creative 5.1 75-watt surround sound system

I use the on-board 7-channel sound. It's good enough for me.
That mixer on the right side of the desk is a Peavey PV6 USB audio mixing board I use to mic up my guitar amps into Reaper x64.

My main PC is running again after two years vacation. 🤣

Intel i7 920
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R v2.0
24GB PC3-10700 (6x4GB)
Sapphire Radeon 7970 (this one skipped the vacation running in my server instead)
Plextor M3 Pro 128GB (4x of those in RAID0)
Fujitsu D2607 SAS-controller
Seasonic M12D 850W
Noctua NH-D14 HSF

Motherboard is kind of crappy, have to cool it to prevent it from turning itself off. 🤣

20151015_190703.jpg

Since then I have changed some components:

Intel Xeon E5645 ES
Asus Sabertooth X58
24GB Corsair DDR3-1600H (6x4GB)
XFX Radeon R9 290 @290X

Haven't overclocked the CPU yet, but I'm hoping for 4000-4100MHz.

The majority of my hardware collection are dual-socket and workstation/enterprise grade boards. It was time for my desktop to take a similar turn.

This is my first modern Intel 2P build, based on a Lenovo Thinkstation D30 motherboard. The original plan was to eventually go dual E5-2687W or E5-2690 v2, but this board may not support those. There is a revision "2.0" board which I believe does support the Ivy Bridge EPs, but by the time prices drop on those I could just upgrade to 2011-v3 instead.

Stock pick from ebay.

3PCqctEl.jpg

Corsair 800D
Seasonic X760 PSU
2x Xeon E5-2680 v1 @ 2.7 Ghz (All core turbo 3.1 Ghz, max turbo 3.5 Ghz)
2x Corsair H105 Hydro AIO
64GB Hynix DDR3 ECC 1333Mhz (for now, will probably upgrade to 1666 or better, getting a single-socket G34 board for my server that I'll probably move these sticks over to)
Noctuas all around (because tax refund, why the hell not)
Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1
EVGA GT 730
Intel 330 120GB SSD (OS)
Samsung Evo 850 250 GB
WD Raptor 150GB
2x WD Black 1TB
2x WD Black 2TB

This required some custom standoffs to get mounted, not sure if the holes are SSI EEB or a combination of that and EATX, but I required 4 new standoffs and had to fill in a cable management hole to fully support the board.

I realize the cooling is overkill, but I already had the first H105 left over from my previous build, decided to get a matching H105 for the second proc. Of course the 800D was never meant for a setup like this so I had to get creative in mounting this beast. Love how this thing idles at like 35-40 on each proc and doesn't get hotter than 50C under load on either.

Still gotta clean up the fan wiring, replace my shitty old fan controller, get some extensions for the PSU cables, the fans, a few other things.

hbsRacsh.jpg

Some pics of the second H105 setup. Cut some aluminum angle to fit, pop riveted the brackets together and drilled the required holes; rock solid. Had to get a second intake in place to feed this rad, so I popped in some 5.25" bay covers from my old Cooler Master HAF932. The foam is in there to reduce flow noise, was pretty loud without the foam but it's not so bad now. Still need to get a filter in there.

6i3Kurul.jpg fO09uxKl.jpg 7WKoyVdl.jpg

For some reason the Cinebench score doesn't seem as high as it should be, might be due the slightly low clocked memory?

Yfsyujgl.png

1B53DDVh.png

Balls out the machine pulls about 630W at the wall under full load, according to my UPS. Not sure how close to accurate it is. That is minus the 50W or so my monitors are pulling.

The machine idles at about 200W. Not too bad I suppose. No clue what my i7-920 build pulled, but I'm guessing it was definitely higher at idle than this setup as I was running a GTX 770 Classified on that build and my proc was overclocked to 3.66Ghz.
