Crazy isn't it? I paid 45.85€ for 2x 4GB Corsair Vengeance kit in January 2012. I regret not getting another such kit when it was still cheap...

That is a nice looking PC you have there Darkman. I don't see many white cases that look good with black. Looks like you stole it somewhere from Policenauts.

it was surprisingly cheap too , does feel a little flimsy compared to the aluminium cases I have.

and you just gave me the urge to play Policenauts, great game,

Would you recommend it, or not? I'm hoping to build a new main pc for myself, and i am torn between getting a (more or less-'tis 25 inches) full atx from e-bay, or that what you've got. The contrast between the colours is very nice, but you mention it's flimsiness?

Ha! Another i7-2600K with 16 GB RAM here.

Radeon HD6770
Audigy whatever
Samsung 840 EVO 256GB SSD
Samsung 1 TB (for temporary stuff, I have a NAS)
Three Samsung DVD/RW drives (for ripping Audio CDs)

Funny how in the 90s/early 00s after three years you had a hopelessly outdated machine. This thing is three years old and it's still very much current.

OK, picture, not very interesting, does have a G210 in it now for the third monitor:
54wBICll.jpg

Secondary machine, for Linux, eight years old:
zTSCWTFl.jpg
Specs:
HP dx2200
AMD chipset, something or other
Pentium D 945 (2xP4, 3.4 GHz, 4MB)
2 GB DDR2
Radeon HD4670
SB PCI128
80 GB HDD + DVD burner
...got the video card and DVD burner for free, the Soundblaster I had laying around, so I only had to buy the RAM upgrade. The whole machine cost me about $25 and runs Linux Mint pretty well!

Old computers from that era make great cheap servers and secondary desktops. Seen people give such computers away for free. I think they're still fast enough for modern desktop use.

I remember upgrading from a Pentium 100 (bought in 95-96) to an Athlon XP 2500+ (bought in 03-04). The difference was like night and day. A few months ago I upgraded from my old 5-8 year old system. It felt more like I upgraded from a brand new low end system to a brand new mid range system. The biggest noticeable difference is that my new system is much quieter and boots a lot faster (Thanks to UEFI. Don't have to wait 15-30 seconds for the BIOS to do its thing).

I know! I'm enjoying this little Linux box so much that I'm almost never powering the i7 up anymore. It's not as zippy as the modern machine (that's to be expected), but perfectly usable.

My workplace has about 20 of those left, for 10€ each. Nobody wants them 🙁

My current Gamer Rig:

MSI ZH77A-G43 ATX motherboard (LGA1155, Intel H77) in custom built system
Intel Core i5-3570 [22nm Ivy Bridge Quad Core, 3.4GHz, 6 MB L1 cache]
16.0 GB of GSkill DDR3 1600 RAM (4x 4GB)
MSI (N680GTX-PM2D2GD5) nVidia GeForce GTX 680 [2 GB GDDR5, 1536 shaders, 1058 core / 1006 shader clock] (PCIe 3.0 16x)
120 GB Intel 330 SATAIII SSD
1.0 TB Western Digital SATAII HDD
DVD-RW
Realtek ALC892 8 channel audio chip
Case: Antec Sonata III ATX
PSU: XFX 650W
OS: Windows 7

Build Date: 2013-01-31

I am tempted to upgrade the Video soon to a GeForce GTX 980. But, I'll probably hold off a bit. Games are still looking good on this system.

Thanks guys! When I bought this old 1940's house back in 2003, the basement was already finished. It was all cedar walls. That helps keep the basement smelling nice. I found this desk at HOM furniture and fell in love with it. I've modded it quite a bit, adding LED lighting, and various holes run run my speakers and keyboard etc. I removed the pull out keyboard drawer cause, well those quite frankly suck. There are 4 PCs there connected to a KVM. My setup is basically Linux Server, Linux Workstation, Gamer Rig (Win7), and Retro PC (Win98 P3). That covers all my bases nicely. If you look closely, you can spot my MT-32 and SC-55.

You are correct. That is the longest mainstay of my desk. It still works, and I have it connected to my Linux workstation via a null modem cable. I can open a bash terminal over that. I can also use the cable to transfer disk images to the floppy drive.

My current/day-to-day PC for the last ~6 years:

- Core 2 Quad Q9550
- Intel DX48BT2
- 8GB DDR3 1333 (originally was 4GB, G.Skill Pi Series - added-on another 4GB of Ripjaws when the pricing crashed a few years ago)
- GeForce GTX 660 2GB SC+ (originally was Radeon HD 4870X2, and later 4870X2+4890 in Tri-Fire)
- 2x500GB Caviar GP
- PC Power & Cooling TurboCool 860W
- Sound Blaster Recon3D (originally was X-Fi Prelude)

Currently it's hooked up to 3 monitors (the primary is a Samsung 2343BWX), with a GeForce GT 610 providing the third output, but over time it's had a variety of monitor configurations. It's also seen the transition from XP Pro to 7 Pro over its life. Currently I don't have any burning desire to upgrade/replace it, but I am in the process of building a secondary desktop (another LGA 775 machine).

How is that one working out for you? Mine failed three times in the warranty span and has developed nasty green stripes afterwards. I'm still using it as a secondary monitor though.

Finaly someone with LGA775 as the main desktop! I already started to feel outdated with my 2007 CQ 😀

Here's my two main machines, one on the left is a Core2 Quad Q6600, on the right is a Pentium D 930, both have 2 Gb DDR2, Geforce 7900one GS one GT/OC graphics. quad is on win7, pd is on xp. Never had a need for anything faster than either of these to be honest.

You're not alone: I love this platform, although mine is not exactly classic 775 CPU, I modded the processor (and socket) for 775 from 771:

Xeon X5450 @3.4ghz
4gb GeIL Black Dragon DDR2 800 MHz CL4
ASUS P5B (updated BIOS microcode for X5450 LGA771)
ASUS 9800GTX+ Dark Knight
160gb Windows 7 64bit
160gb Debian stable
DVDRW LG

Oh socket 775 will be around for a couple of years at least.. my mom has one c2d at home and one at the office. Both her and my dad have c2d laptops and so does my wife. Nothing to worry about 😀
