C2D is going to be around for a long time indeed, when tweaked just right it keeps up with current gen games and first gen i5/i7 is even better. No need to spend huge heaps to keep up with every generation.

Hardware in general is very affordable I find. I don't save money on the processor for example, got to be an i7, because it will save me a LOT of hours, weeks likely, time that I can use to do other fun things 😀

How is that one working out for you? Mine failed three times in the warranty span and has developed nasty green stripes afterwards. I'm still using it as a secondary monitor though.

Had it since 2009 with nary a problem. I like it. 😀

No I'm just curious how a i7 can help me save time compared to a i5 or i3.I mean if I use the pc for gaming it's not going to matter what proc I'm using, just how much time I spend playing a certain game.

Some of us compile a lot of software and/or render movies too, so if it takes 15 minutes to compile firefox instead of 20 minutes? That's time saved. I doubt I'd notice a difference in games, but I would when it comes to compiling and rendering.

You won't have to spend time on upgrading that PC as often either, but I think that's more of an issue when you have an i3 or lower end cpu.

As someone who used to make videos and documentary films a fast cpu can save anywhere from a few minutes on short clips to several hours on a long film when encoding as well helps a Lot when editing.

I wish I had the time for games 😀

Video encoding is the big time saver of course. But I also create a lot of resources for work, mostly using Microsoft Office, a bit of simple programming like Arduino, App Inventor, Construct 2. At work I have an AMD Phenom II quad core with Windows 7, it's fine, but it's not fast and minutes go by waiting for the machine.

The biggest time saver hands-down is getting a solid state hard drive.

But you see I don't upgrade all the time either. I would like to get the new Devils Canyon Core i7 but that would mean I also need to get a new motherboard, so not a cheap upgrade and it won't be that much faster than my current i7 3770.

You got to put a $ figure on you and start thinking in those terms. How much is an extra hour of free time worth to you? Then you can make purchasing decisions without the emotions.

Time is precious and I want to be a time rich person 😀

Just finished installing new silent fans. Made this 6-way splitter cable to connect all of them to the single controllable fan header on the mainboard:

Some attempt at cable routing: (I think I failed)

Well, I can tell you that you're much better at it than me.

(Then again, I'm old school when it comes to cable routing in general. Very old school 😅 ).

Thanks 😀
I was kinda trying to get all cables lined up neatly along that central column, like something you'd see on /r/cableporn. Turns out that's impossible when your power/SATA/USB3 cables are thick and flat and won't bend along sharp corners at all. The CPU power cable was the only cable I could get in a straight line.. but wouldn't fit behind the cable retainers because it's a tad short.

It's the Corsair C70 "ammo can". I like the unique theme, something different from the usual "plain black box" or "radical spaceship" themes.

The i7 has these 4 Hyperthreading 'fake cores' over the i5. But I don't care much for hyperthreading, I even disabled it on my i3 because some older games get hickups (populous III for example). As I don't have much multicore software, a fast i3 is fine. i5 is nice too, sure. i7 is nice but needlessly expensive for most users.

The Xeon E3-1230v3 is a decent cheap alternative to the i7. Similar in performance to an i5 but supports hyperthreading. Not sure what one would use hyperthreading for tho, or how much of a difference it makes.

In the Pentium 4 days it (HT) tended to show the biggest gains in multimedia/productivity benchmarks, and in some cases would cause issues with games (instability or lower performance). Usually gaming-centric machines had it disabled as a result, but "everyone else" tended to leave it on. Some new-ish benchmarks I found with a quick search seem to indicate that with very-new games it's becoming an advantage though:

don't forget you can plop in socket 771 xeons in socket 775 boards with the right chipset using those adapters now. the xeons clock even higher than the q9550s. i have seen reports of 4.2-4.6 GHZ!
