My budget 300€ and I already had these components.; hassis, HDD 1TB and DVD RW.

It's very simple, maybe with low specs for a new PC today, although more than enough for me.
In any case it can be upgraded in the future to AMD Ryzen 7 and 64GB RAM.

You should had all samsung 840 SSD drives pulled for potential reliability issues (they tend to brick themselves for no reason with total data loss). I have these and are good: WD blue SSD, or Samsung 860 EVO, 860 Pro or Crucial M500, MX500 or one of the Micron enterprise grade SSD drives.

Replace Realtek WLAN with ethernet Intel Pro/1000 PT x1 single port cards, only 25 to 30 each. True TCP/ip offload and this made XP faster on my Optiplex 780 E8600 so I bought more for my computers and supports windows 10 too.
And use a gamer grade N wireless router in bridge mode to this card. (not Dlink).

Only Micron P300 100GB and 200GB, early Intel SSD 32GB and 64GB are SLC. Rest of SSDs out there and current SSDs are MLC and up.

Registered memory run hotter, yes HOT, and slower. So went back to plain ECC unbuffered modules and is cooler and utilizes all the bandwidth of Intel processors in 4 channel mode.
I used Aida 64 to test the differences and can see the difference during using computer too. Mine is Z420 too.

Quadro K4000 is nice but not suitable for gaming for two reasons, lower game performance and GPU itself is underclocked. If not intended for gaming on it, that's fine with what you have in it.

My daily driver:
Z220, Win 10 Pro.
Samsung 500GB EVO SSD. 2x 4TB WD gold.
Xeon E3-1280 V2.
Intel Pro/1000 PT x1 single port ethernet card.
16GB ECC DDR3-1866 at DDR3-1600 Hyundai modules of 4x 4GB and even reports temperature on each! in HWmonitor even. That was pulled from Mac Pro computers, and I have 8 4GB more ECC (micron) in Z420, also memory pulls from Mac Pro.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the upgrades/changes. Windows 11 is very meh, I hate the new startmenu. Vista has been fun to play around with again for the first time in years and I've upgraded/changed the soundcards in both of those boxes so I can hopefully eventually get optical audio out of both for cleaner sound through my headphones. Both machines are fine through my speakers but using any headphones and I can hear some interference when I unmute the line-in on my main PC.

I had an FX5900XT in the 98 box for a long time but something strange has been happening with it since we had a brownout in the area in the summer. No matter what motherboard and powersupply combination I use with it, it throws up an insufficient power message and the drivers say it's going to run in reduced power mode or something along those lines, so I said screw it and replaced it with my TI4200 that has a big fat Zalman cooler on it.

You should had all samsung 840 SSD drives pulled for potential reliability issues (they tend to brick themselves for no reason with total data loss). I have these and are good: WD blue SSD, or Samsung 860 EVO, 860 Pro or Crucial M500, MX500 or one of the Micron enterprise grade SSD drives.

Thanks for the warning, only my installed steam and gog games on those drives so if they brick they all have cloud save backups and I can just reinstall. I'll make sure I don't use these drives for important data.

Is Ralink Realtek? Then it might be a good suggestion to replace that card!
However, the Pro/1000 PT is a TP network card... so I assume you mentioned it by mistake.
What's the WLAN card you'd recommend?

Atm this probably probably does not matter much, as FreeBSD currently only supports up to 802.11g respective 54Mbit/s (802.11ac is still WIP).
It's still sufficient for YouTube etc 😀
Currently I use a FritzBox 7490. But I'll move soon, so I already am curious which CPE router I'll get with the new provider.

Actually I use registered RAMs because they are super cheap; the whole 128GB lot was just 100 euros.
Unbuffered RAMs, no matter EDIMM or UDIMM, are much more expensive, so I happily take the speed tradeoff.

I only use it as xorg framebuffer, with 2D acceleration. For safety reasons, Windows is used only in VMs.
So this card is actual overkill 😀
And I like what you told about it... underclocked GPU means that it will probably last a while 😀

The hard drive was something I already had. It came from my insurance company after a lightning incident. I was planning to replace it with an SSD for a while, but didn't bother.

I got the graphics card in last September used for about 130€. It was meant to be temporary until December or January and replaced with a 6800XT, then crypro currencies happened. 2 weeks ago I've seen an RX480 being sold on an auction for 400€. As things stand, if I'd sell it and add another 400, on a better day I could get a 6600XT. I should have just gone with the RX5700 XT back then...

Probably the next two upgrades will be a 1TB SSD and another 16GB set of RAM. Then GPU, to whatever is priced the least outrageously and offers at least double the performance that day, then the CPU to a Ryzen 7 3700 or 5700G, whichever is available that day.

Yeah, I did a similar thing with my build. I actually built it originally with a R7 1700 non-x.
Then I scored a good deal on a used 3700x about 6 months or so after they launched so I finally upgraded the CPU.
About 6 months after that I actually received a 3900x as a gift so bonus upgrade there. I sold the 3700x and the Vega 56 (blower design) that I was using at the time and upgraded to the 3900x and the GTX1080.
I started with a RX580 and upgraded to the Vega for a cheap price but it was noisy as hell.
This was about 3 months or so into the crypto boom but my buddy had managed to score a 3080 and he made me a very nice deal on his old 1080. It matches my ROG Strix board so that is a bonus.
But that is why I still have to fairly slow 2400mhz ram. It was what I could get in early 2017 when I built the machine originally.
It is cool to have the same build evolve like that. You don't often see that anymore as tech changes so quickly, and Intel tends to launch a new socket every 15 minutes.
But don't anyone tell you that you can't run a 3900x on a first gen b series platform, cause if you have a good board you sure as heck can. The massive 360mm rad helps though.

The really cool thing is that I had previously had a FX9590 on a Asus Crosshair motherboard in a Genome I case. The case was new but the board/cpu and internals were all bought used in like 2015 I think.
I had that machine overclocked to like 5.1-5.2ghz. All it would do for sure.
The Deepcool cooler sprung a leak one night and soaked the entire computer. Deepcool support was really great. I actually expected to only get a case /cooler replacement but they Paypal'd me funds to replace everything.
And that is how I built the Ryzen machine to begin with. The only thing that carried over was my then GPU a R9-380x.
I still have the FX-9590. I don't actually know if it works or not. One day I will hopefully pick up a cheap 990 AM3+ board and test it.

I just retired my Devil's Canyon 4790K and GTX 970 SLI PC I had been running for a number of years and built this new behemoth a few months ago. I'll post pictures later on.
