So a friend was cleaning his basement and came across this old Gateway gx-350 system that was long since forgotten. He knows I have a penchant for old hardware and let me take her home!

The good: hey it's a free old system!

The bad: no case cover as of right now, and it hasn't had one for probably ten years. That means no case cover but it also means dirty dirty dirty!!

Here's what she looked like when I got her. I like that there is a random cd case on the bottom as well as some paper towel in there. Later I discovered two sandwich bags as well!

I cleaned her up a bit and things looked much better.

Despite the decade of dirt buildup it booted fine. Needs a battery, hard drive and cd rom but it works!

However, I am contemplating instead using this k6-3 setup I've had in the closet. Something about those little blue cooler master socket 7 hs/fan setups paired with the gold-ish motherboard takes me back!!

I am curious, but do you have any more pictures of the Gateway case? I just bought a complete working Gateway G6-400 for cheap to cannibalize. I don't want the case, but I don't want to scrap it either. Any chance the covers might fit yours; if interested?

Hey thanks! Yes I would be interested if the cover fits. There apparently were three versions of the gx series. Desktop. Micro tower (micro atx which is what mine is) and full tower. My friend said he'd look again. But I don't think he'll have much luck if it has been gone so long. Here are a couple others.

Mine is the full tower, although yours still looks pretty tall for a mATX. They may fit yet. I've attached a couple of pictures of the case from the seller I bought it from. I'll get a measurement of the panels and let you know their sizes.

[EDIT]

Probably won't fit seeing as your case looks to be on the shorter side, length-wise.

Looking at the front drive bays mine has 2 5.25 bays and yours has 4 so it doesn't look like itll fit (also look at the expansion slots on the back, and yours seems to have a normal sized PSU while mine is small). I really really appreciate you asking and taking the time to check though!

No problem. I think the PSU is actually mATX. Did some quick research on this particular model, and the first complaint I saw was regarding the size of the PSU. It definitely isn't a normal sized PSU. It's either proprietary or it may actually be mATX.

I've found some interesting items inside old PCs before (even small glass marbles inside an old Deer ATX PSU), but that CD case tray has to be the most random one yet. Of course without a case cover for so long it could be that someone just dropped one inside - that could also explain the paper towel and sandwich bags. Nifty find nonetheless, and surprising that it still works after being neglected all this time.

Ooohh, the pain......

Yep I suppose that'll be plan b. I'm supposed to see my friend tomorrow so I'll know if he had any luck finding the cover. Otherwise I'll try my luck at making one!

just a thought I'm chucking out there.
How about ditching the case all together and using Brickpad's more standard case instead?

I kinda wanted to keep this a micro atx size build, if for no other reason than space considerations (which do get to be a concern when you have ten or so systems already haha). Plus if I get that bigger case I'll start thinking "well I could leave this P ii build in there, or I could get a full size board to make a new retro build!" And then the cycle would start yet again. 😊

You don't need much. A brake, dill, good shear and sheet metal is about it.
