Greetings all,
I am now in the process of building a small, not quite best spec, socket 7 system. I will possibly upgrade parts at a later time but for now I have the following....
Asus P/II-P55T2P4 Rev 3.10
64mb RAM
ATI Rage Pro 128 32mb PCI Video
SB 32 PnP CT3600 with 30 pin ram slots
DFE-530tx PCI Ethernet
Maxtor 9065ou2 600mb Hard Drive
CDRW drive
and finally
AMD K6/2+ 500 ACR cpu
All will be housed, for now, in an AOpen case. I will post pics as I go through the parts clean up. So to start it all off (gonna be a few here)...

Very nice!

I'm still doing some testing, but found the ATI cards to not be well optimized for the K6 CPUs. Nvidia and 3dfx are better options IMO.

But of course it does depends on what games you want to play too.

if you happen to have the desire, that empty socket in the 4th picture is for a TAG-ram upgrade. One of the quirks of the Intel chipset is its inability to properly cache more than 64mb of ram. You have 3 options.

#1: install 64mb of ram or less
#2: install a proper sram chip, and then as much ram as you want.
#3: install >64mb of ram and suffer a significant performance penalty. Accounts vary, but 10-20% is what I've seen.

Personally i'd go with #2. The manual will describe the proper type of chip. I', 90% certain it will be one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/131830296825

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

That's the board/revision I'm using on my maxed out socket 7 system. Great board! 😀

It doesn't support the high multipliers needed for the K6-2+, but you can set the multiplier to 2 and have the processor interpret it as 6. This will get it running at 66x6=400MHz. Overclock the FSB to 75 for 450 or 83 for 500MHz - the mainboard should be stable at that speed, your cards may not.

Banshee or Voodoo 3 would be a better fit, IMO.

Yep. 32k x 8 is the right type, 15ns is fast enough.

Although it's not really necessary if you're running 9x only. I'm running 128MB in mine to give Windows 2000 a bit of breathing room.

Would this chip work for that socket as well..

As to upgrades and parts vs parts.. thanks for the input. I will consider what to do with it after I get it hopefully stable at 83mhz. Which cpu-z version will be best for that age hardware? Not sure if the current version will work on it.

wrong package, too slow. 15ns is for 66mhz 12ns chips will work for bus speeds up to 83mhz.

if your set on buying new parts: www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/IDT-Integr ... fqkw%3d%3d

that one is rated for 83mhz. Be careful, mouser has a minimum order. So if you have other projects....

if your using more than 64mb of ram, its necessary. The upgrade is simple and cheap.

You're right, I worded that wrong. I meant to say, 64MB is enough for running 9x.

And I just checked, I _did_ use a 12ns part in mine. It's stable @ 83MHz.

Hey all,
Got time to tear down the case I was planning to use. Found the cancer I didn't want to find. Will have to sand and paint internal case area. Other than that the only issue I see is for airflow, 1 front fan and no mount area for a rear so it's gotta exhaust from PSU.

Picture time.....

For the K6-2+ CPU you should really get a Super Socket 7 mobo that supports 100MHz FSB as well as PC100 SDRAM - K6 CPUs with L2 cache are pretty fast so it would be a shame to use it on that slow-ass motherboard. An AT VIA MVP3 / ALi Aladdin V shouldn't be that hard to get (or expensive).

Frankly I'm not even sure the mobo will post with the K6-II+ since most boards (including newer SS7 stuff) required BIOS updates to run them.

It posts just fine at 83mhz FSB, only registers 400mhz but i think it's the BIOS limit. BIOS is already at 107, i think is the version. Need to do a RTC replacement and then start loading the OS onto a CF or maybe a hard drive. Just pushing this board to its full potential with the CPU, not worried about super performance just want it to run for a few old games and for the fact its just running 🤣.

Still have the case to finish and other components to clean, the GF is holding me up due to being pregnant 😊 . I get a bonus turkey at Thanksgiving this year.

I love this case. Back at the time it was new I worked at a ma and pa computer shop and we got a lot of business from Architect and Engineering companies. I built 100s of CAD machines based on that case. I'd kill to have one for nostalgia reasons.

True, I was kidding for a bit 🤣

But in all honesty, virtually all revisions of this motherboard I encountered one way or another, turned out to all be the same (late) revision.

Hence why I asked 😁
