Same here. I never had a daily system this powerful, closest thing to it was a 775 system I had years back.
But why would anyone need this most of power for a daily system? Gaming systems and workstation aside.

Also, the same reason anyone has anything other than the basic necessities... because we can. 😁

Slower than my main PC... so I can call it retro 😵 Anyway Core2 architecture is 10 years old and quite obsolete by todays standards.

I really would not call core2 retro yet, very old and out dated yes.
Core2 was still used in new systems up towards the beginning of 2010/end of 2009. and that's when the X58 platform was out. Given that it can use the newest video cards and ddr3 ram I can't call the core2 retro yet. at least not the last gen stuff.

Leftovers of a failed experiment in Xeon 5080s. I scored a pair for about 25 bucks shipped, turns out board does not POST with those procs, gets stuck with code 01 on start. Got a pair of X5470s in now.

Might ghetto one of those Asus squirrel cage blower fans onto the northbridge heatsink, but it seems to get decent airflow from the fan on the second heatsink.

Was a longshot that it would work... the plan was hopefully getting about 4.5Ghz or more out of those Netburst Xeons and running with a pair of the 7900 GTXs for some mid-2006 "what-if" fun.

Anyone know what specific board can actually run these, or if the Skulltrail board can actually run these? I'm assuming anything Core and Core 2 based will run on it, so the next best thing is a pair of Xeon 5160s.

I'm curious how much GPU this thing can run before it becomes a bottleneck. Do you think it can handle a modern gtx1080?

Dunno. Should toss my GTX 1080 Hybrid in there and find out.

Most likely it'll bottleneck pretty hard. If I can get 4.5Ghz out of my X5470s I should give it a go.

Well this would likely be similar to an I7 990X or 3930k in raw compute preformance

Battlefield 1 and Doom would probably be the perfect games to test on this, I have both and those do seem to take advantage of the multithreading whereas most other games I can think of currently don't really take advantage of more than 4 threads at most, or if they do they do not seem to benefit much from it.

Totally missed the dual core xeon's thought you had 8 total cores, so no wont compare to the 990x, maybe to a Q9550

Actually I have X5470s in there now, also have X5482s that came with the board.

Fully Buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) modules are used in some systems with large maximum memory capacities. In normal registered/buffered memory only the control lines are buffered, whereas in fully buffered memory the data lines are buffered as well with all transfers performed in a serial fashion; the additional logic present on each FB-DIMM module transforms serial input into parallel signals required to drive memory chips.

Thank you for the information and links. I now have both BIOSes and will see what happens once I get the motherboard running.
