Hey all...

Today I got an NEC Ready 9616... Pentium 120MHz Socket 5 with 16mb RAM (2 of 4 SiMM slots filled). It came as a complete system except for no HD... tossed in a spare SCSI controller + drive in there. The seller told me he couldn't get it to display video... turns out the video card was not inserted all the way. Seems to run fine. I took it apart and cleaned the machine.

The bad news is the CMOS battery is dead and it apparently uses a bq3287amt there is no coin battery or any other battery on the mobo.

During boot it says System battery is dead - Replace and run SETUP; Real time clock error

Any help would be much appreciated.

I got Windows 95 on it up and running. I found a replacement battery and some more RAM for it on ebay, total of $10 shipped. The RTC is at least socketed and not soldered so it is not bad to replace. The thing that sucks is you have to remove the mobo first to replace it since the RTC is blocked by the drivecage, which is not removable. Swapped out the 6X CD-ROM for the 24X one in my 486... makes more sense on a newer system.

I also want to give it a gfx card upgrade at some point.

That WDC Paradise video card is one of the fastest ISA cards you can find - slightly faster then the ET4000AX - but it's too slow for a pentium system. If you have an ISA 486 or a 386 the WDC could be an upgrade.

Nice system! It has a WD90C31A based graphics card installed, right ?
One of my laptops has a similar WD graphics chip.
Interestingly, it does support drivers meant for the VGA core found in the PVGA1A/PVGA1B chips.
So perhaps it is possible to run old SVGA games on this card, too, if the VGA BIOS allows it.
Or at least Turbo Pascal programs compiled with Borland's SuperVGA BGI..
Or Windows 2.x in 800x600. 😉
