Decided to build a 2nd XP machine from whatever parts I had.

Specs:
ASUS A7V600-X motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
TNT2 M64 GPU (placeholder until I get a FX5200/5500 or anything from the FX era)
256MB RAM
40GB Samsung SP0411N
Hitachi-LG GCR-8481B CD-ROM
JNC 4JA-8673 case (black w/ thermistors and temperature monitor)
Premier DR-B300ATX PSU
and obviously,Windows XP Home Edition SP3.

This might prove to be a painful experience 😊

I'd put 2x1GB DDR-400 in the board, overclock the XP2500+ to 2.2GHz (provided yours is a 333MHz FSB Barton) and use a GF6800 or so.
Without overlcocking, try to find a FX5900 or so, dunno how picky you could be when it comes to ultra or non-ultra and 5900 or 5950.

On second thought...I used to have a Premier 300W PSU and it made my Celeron 400MHz unstable. Fixed its stability issues when upgrading the 300W Premier with some 235W Powerman PSU 😀.

The Premier was brand new too while the 235W came out of some old build and was second hand.

Whats missing in your collections?

The PSU is actually one of the quite decent 200-250 watters I have - PI coils and stuff all installed from factory,Canicon caps that seem to still hold up (which is quite amazing, knowing those pop after a long time) and some T shaped heatsinks that are actually quite thick.

As for the CPU,it's the 400MHz FSB version (brown-coloured chip - weren't all 333FSB chips before the 3200+ coloured in green,to differentiate them from their 400FSB counterparts?) so I can get at least a 3200+ out of it if not more than that, and that with using the Spire cooler it came with.

GPU wise,I'm not sure if I'll come across a Radeon 9600/9700 ever again where I live. I once scored a 256MB 9550 (which was actually a 9600 Pro card)but gave it away with a Pentium 4 LGA775 machine (865PE chipset) along with my only FX5200,and an entire another PC - Pentium 3 (slot 1),GA-6BXC motherboard,a few MBs of RAM (128? Don't remember exactly),a 8GB HDD and a P&O LC-B350ATX PSU. I'd be more than happy if I could at least find a FX5700. (I still remember when I found one on the street without a heatsink - I thought it was dead but it turned out to be fine. It was made by Palit I think, since Palit made purple PCBs. I could really say it was a big upgrade over the Geforce 2 GTS 32MB (ASUS V7700/TVR) I had which not only sucked but it was also artefacting on higher resolutions (anything until 1024x768 was fine - anything ranging from 1280x720 and up had purple rectangles overlaid over the screen)

As for the RAM,it's not exacly a problem since I'm using a nLited down version of it that came from a old DVD I had (which originally was intended for a ECS K7S5A,Radeon VE/7000 32MB configuration).

Indeed, this was fine for XP SP1, but even SP2 ran better with 512MB or 768MB.
For SP3, +1024MB or so would be recommend. 😀

I hope so. Good luck! 😀

Just went for some retro shopping today. I didn't come home with a 9600 Pro...I came home with a X1650 Pro AGP from Sapphire. 😁

Interesting haul!

Considering performance benchmarks, for example at 1280x1024 resolution (without AA & AF image improvements), the Radeon X1650 Pro should perform at the same level like the Radeon X800.

I remember that i've upgraded from a Radeon 9700 to a Geforce 6800 LE for my Athlon XP back in the day.

why the 3450? I'd nab a faster cpu for the system if you can.

I have some problems with the 1650 at the moment.

As for the fastest CPU for this platform,I have a 3GHz Prescott, but knowing those 8IPE1000 motherboards are a bit fragile last time I tried a Celeron D with,I wouldn't risk it. (it puts out a lot of heat that can possibly kill the northbridge. I actually have a dead 8IPE1000 stored away for parts.)

I have a Gigabyte 8IPE1000-G which i got from a trash PC with a 3 ghz Prescott about a year ago, i had to update the BIOS since the original version had a bug with prescotts (temps not recorgnized properly), it works without issues with my 3.2 Ghz Prescott even today.

You can still try finding a higher clocked Northwood on ebay, Northwood are cooler than Prescotts anyways

Here some ebay links (from china though)

I took care to recap and upgrade stuff inside this one.It looks like the one in this pic, except I replaced every cap on the low voltage (DC) side and standby zone.

Carlos S. M. - I might simply OC the 2.8 to 3GHz rather than getting another chip.

just set the bus speed to 215 to get 3 Ghz, but don't forget the RAM will be overclocked as well so make sure the RAM will handle it unless you can downclock the RAM.

Another tip, don't overclock a Northwood too much and/or abuse of it because it can suffer the "Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome"

Wasn't SNDS related to the VCore?

The SNDS should not happen if you clock <= 3.0GHz at stock Vcore, or not?

I have a P4 example with 2.66GHz. Should be no problem to clock up to 3.0?

Just had a conversation with someone else on Facebook.

I might score another mobo - an ASRock P4i65G,and also I might score a MSI 845E Max/Winfast A340 (FX5200) combo on Wednesday. 😁

As for the current P4 rig - I finished installing systems on both HDDs...however I have a problem. The 80GB is having Windows 7,and the 40 is having XP SP3 Media Center Edition, the 2005 version. Any ideas why I'm getting a BOOTMGR is missing error when booting the 80GB HDD? And any ideas how to fix it?
