Oh man, I had that motherboard back in the day. My housemate did too along with a few other people I know IIRC. It was a pretty popular board around here. Well priced with a good feature set, plus Fatal1ty himself was still a fairly well known name at that point in time.

Mine was running an Athlon 64 X2 5400+ and two Gigabyte 7600GT's in SLI. What a mess SLI was back then.

Hope the build goes well for you

Last of the parts should get here today. If so I'll finish the build tonight.
I also added more info/photos of the case/video cards.
The red PCB and blue heat sinks go well together.

Why go with 7950GT's, a pair of 7900GTX cards would be amazing, I have a pair myself, and why they can't be passivly cooled the run very quiet, i can't hear them.

The 7950gt is a faster card.

Than a 7900 GTX ?
No, it isn't.
Check clock speeds, 7900 GTX has 650MHz Core clock and 1600MHz GDDR3 memory clock.
Default for 7950 GT is 550MHz Core and 1400MHz Memory.
You may be able to OC'ed 7950 GT to 7900 GTX level.

Well this sucks, looking at the boards history in the bios, yes the board logs its usage, power offs, reboots, power on hours and average temps and fan speeds. Looks like the motherboard fans have been dead for a very long time. 😵

I think i may just return the board and find a second one. It was sold to me as being in perfect working order, but all 3 fans are bad. Id hate to compete the build only to need to replace the board right after words. It's

You might be hard-pressed to find one whose fans haven't died. Abit used some reeeeal shitty chipset fans around that time. (To be fair, so did everyone else.)

Agreed. But tge sekker did state they were 100% wirking witch makes me mad.
And I have mote bad news. The hr-01 heatsink has damaged pipes. 😵
My recent track record or used parts.

3 of 6 motherboards doa
1 board dead fans.
2 boards never shipped.
2 bad cpu's
4 bad sticks of ram
2 damaged sticks of pc166 but was simply fixable.
1 bad hdd
1 damaged cpu heatsink.
4 good video cards.
2 working sticks of ram.
One goid ls120 drive.
One good cd drive.

Talk about bad luck. I found that the ddr550 i gotns bad too 😵
I need to find the witch that cursed me.

Well ill keep the board, but ill be bumping up my next build, this one sould not have anywhere as many problems.

Edit. OP edited. Bumping up my next build. The case is coming from Germany so it will take some tome to complete, but i have alot of oarts to mod and refurb before I can start. Suck as the water cooling system.

Make sure the fan headers aren't burned out. Happens sometimes when fans seize up and overload the transistor driving them.

OK aside from the GPU I made up my mind on all the parts. See the OP. I'll start prepping what parts I have tonight and post photos.

Ok some updates. I got a nos dfi x38 tr2b motherboard with a set of boxed 6990s. I know the 6990s are not quite vista era, but i could not find any 4gb 4870x2.

Where were you able to get your hands on a pair of 6990s?

Everything I'm seeing on ebay is like 500+ dollars now.

Looking forward to the build.

Crimson Tide - EVGA 1000P2; ASUS Z10PE-D8 WS; 2x E5-2697 v3 14C 3.8 GHz on all cores (All core hack); 64GB Samsung DDR4-2133 ECC
EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3; EVGA 750 Ti SC; Sound Blaster Z

Ebay, 150$ apice. With water blocks, I was the only bidder. I got stupid lucky somehow. I kind of wish i was out bidded. I really wanted to go dual 4870x2 4gb. But the 6990s had waterblocks and the original boxes.

I'm thinking of going UV orange, i dont think it will look all to good with a silver case. But the board has uv orange parts and I have some UV orange cables laying around.

Hello Jade Falcon! I am also interested in building a Vista machine and I mostly succeeded in getting the components and assembling the machine for testing! It is based around Abit AW9D-MAX motherboard! Vista is such a good operating system with the right hardware; it's a shame it was released before it was truly ready!
PS: maybe if you are interested i can post the complete specs for the machine and my experience!
