I have pulled the beast out of storage and plan to rebuild it. I was never really happy with the case and so I am starting with that. Here is what I have ordered. Looks pretty good for an inexpensive case. I got mine on sale for $25.00 shipped with a mail-in $5.00 rebate.

Not too bad looking. I like it.
If it were not for the side window Id grab a cooler master 430 every time I needed a cheap case. They can be had for a little less then 50$ at times.

Still nice looking case you got there. But were is the HDD cage?

EDIT: OK odd, so the hdd's mount on the bottom of the case?

EDIT:
So what kind of specks does the Beast have?

The case has 1 internal/external 3.5" bay, 2 internal 3.5" bays below that and the 3.5" / 2.5" mounting on the bottom of the case. I plan on a single 3.5" drive mounted on the rubber shock mounts in the bottom of the case.

Some of the specs are undetermined. I think I know what CPU I will be using but not 100% sure. I can say this for sure right now. It will run Win9x, either Windows 98 SE or Windows ME. I am leaning heavily towards Windows ME because I don't have anything loaded with it and I want to play with it. The other thing I can say for sure is the motherboard. ASRock 775i65G R3.0.

Disks like that may have a system lockout that will prevent you from installing it on anything but the brand of OEM system it was shipped with.

It's just a regular OEM disk with a sticker slapped on it. It isn't like a Dell proprietary disk or anything.

Short version.

Decided to use Intel Pentium E5800 CPU, had several to choose from and decided on the fastest thing I had.

Decided I will dual boot between Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Millennium since I never use these operating systems. I can call it Y2K Beast. I'll have to think of a better name on the same theme.

I am looking for a good Intel stock cooler before they started skimping on them. This one looks fairly thick and has the copper core. Look good to you? Will order soon. http://www.ebay.com/itm/132096950675

Going to use 512MB DDR400 CAS3 RAM (Crucial 256MBx2)

Technically it's not a rebuild since I have enough parts that I haven't even touched the original Beast yet.

Nice simple case, not over stylised, I like it!
I actually duel booted 2k and ME for a while in the late 90's? Didn't last long as never really liked WinME, but did think it was cool having 2 "millennial" OS's

I did not really care for WinME back when it was out but I won't be using it for a desktop system now, just for games. I think it will be cool to have it alongside Windows 2000.

I have some ideas for the case like a custom Windows sticker and I will plug the USB 3.0 ports with black silicon port plugs,

Since this system is going to be running different OS's than usual for me, I am really thinking about going different on video card too. How about an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.

The case came in today. It is fairly thin metal but I like it. I have some 120mm Vantec Stealth fans on order for it.

Trying to figure out video card(s). If I stick with nvidia I am hearing conflicting information on it supporting Fog Table emulation. Mybe toss in a Voodoo2 or what about an AGP 6800 and a PCI 440MX? Disable the 6800 in ME and disable the 440MX in 2k? Just use a monitor with dvi and vga and have 440mx to vga and 6800 to dvi. Sound sane? Now I wish I had a Voodoo3 PCI card....

Windows 9x video solved. I ordered a couple XFX GeForce 5200, 128-bit, PCI cards. I can still use my favorite 45.23 drivers with these, I almost ordered some 5500's until I noticed they were not in the 45.23 driver inf file. Now to figure out the W2K AGP video card.

Waiting for parts 🙁

Sound card selected and ordered, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (SB0350)

Should work well in Windows 9x and 2k. I had serious issue with a SB Live! and 2k back in the day on a dual CPU rig, that's when I swapped over to the Santa Cruz. Hoping the Audigy 2 ZS has no such issues.

Keep in mind this build isn't 'great' at anything in particular. Just trying to cover a large timeline of games and parts selection will never be the best at any one thing. When it's done it will sit beside my "Time Machine".

Leaning heavily towards GeForce 6800, since it is the last nvidia native AGP GPU. I have fever tried any bridged chips and not sure of their issues. I was looking at some ATI stuff as well.

I got in the silicon USB covers and I like them even if it just keeps me from using them by accident. I also got the intel stock cooler in and I am happy with it for the E5800 CPU which is the fastest CPU the board will take without overclocking the chipset.

I am going to try Windows ME with DirectX 7 and a nvidia utility to see if I get fog in thief 2. The GeForce PCI 5200 or a MX440 will be used if it doesn't work. I have heard conflicting information about it. I have also considered Voodoo2 or if I can find a cheap Voodoo3 which I don't think exists.

Also looking at bumping the RAM up to 1GB of DDR400

Thought about using an Audigy 5.25" front panel but I would only use the headphone jack so I will wire the case front audio to the Audigy front audio with an adapter cable. I might put a haedphone amplifier in between the two internally. Something like 12dB, maybe 20 for simplicity and stability sake, of voltage gain and good current for 32-Ohm cans.

Got enough parts in to go ahead and install Windows 2000 Pro for initial testing and ran out of time.

Still a lot of work to do.

Really hoping the rubber fan mounts show up soon! The two side case fans dropped temps by 5C while at idle in BIOS after letting settle for 30 minutes. I am betting good results with CPU, chipset and GPU under full load.

The blue LED light is gone 😉

Well, the Nvidia GeForce 6800GT does do vertex fog and table fog.

I used 3D Winbench 2000 to test. I didn't have a lot of time so testing was hurried. Looked good and I did load riva tuner and coolbits 2 so I am willing to bet that riva tuner enabled it??? it was checked by default in riva tuner when I openend it. Will try on thief 2 soon.
