I bought a Tulip 'at compact 3' a while ago, and with my Tulip 'pc compact 2' now in full working order, I decided to try and fix this one up. I has had a rough life, and multiple problems.
When I got it, the machine came with the original Tulip Monitor (a paperwhite VGA monitor), one 1.44MB FDD and a harddrive. The machine has an Intel 286 running at 12.5MHz.
The video adapter is an ATi VIP p/n 18008.
Initially, screws are missing, connectors in the machine were disconnected and/or connected in the wrong way, but it did POST. Someone not-so-good-with-electronics was in there and tried to fix it I guess
There a three tasks for me at the moment:
- The floppydrive is mechanically broken, it is not possible to insert a disk (it seems stuck somehow, probably a spring). I will replace it probably.
- Floppydrive(s) are not correctly recognised and booting is impossible. Using a seperate/other controller makes no difference. I found one usenet post from 1998 suggesting that it might be one of the chips on the board, and since I have nothing else to try, I ordered a new one on eBay (they're not really expensive). On this chip on the motherboard are scratches that suggest that some tried to take it out before. Maybe they found the usenet post also 😀 My guess is that it's a 20% chance of fixing the problem. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/nl.co … are/4N-OQEand28
- The HDD seems stuck, but I won't invest any time in that until I fixed the floppy problem.
- Cleaning!
