Having managed to finally fix my Pentium II machine and play some great old games, I'm now looking to add one more machine to the wardrobe to fill that space between the early to mid 2000's with an XP build. I have a few of the parts for it already which is why I chose to do this.
So far I have the motherboard, CPU with cooler, RAM to test, sound card, hard drives, 3.5" floppy drive.
MB: GIGABYTE 7VM400M-RZ
CPU: Athlon XP 2600+
RAM: 512MB
SC: Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music
HDD: 120GB x2
Pretty boring build from over a decade ago and I think I bought that motherboard in a rush to replace a dead one otherwise I wouldn't have gone with a Micro-ATX board. But as I said it's a boring build so I wanted to spice it up by maxing out the CPU, the RAM, and buying a really good video card from the era. I've been looking around on Ebay for video cards and narrowed it down to two, a Radeon x1950 Pro AGP, and a GeForce 7900GS. Both cards have great performance in games from the time like Doom 3, Quake 4, and F.E.A.R, but the GeForce is twice the price of the Radeon.
I also have a GeForce 7600 GS 256MB from Inno3D, but I'm not sure it works. I did have a card that I think blew a capacitor (which may be what that poo stain is), but I'm pretty sure that was an 8600 GS.
So I'd really like my build to look like this:
MB: GIGABYTE 7VM400M-RZ
CPU: Athlon XP 3200+ (Max for the MB with a 333MHz FSB)
RAM: 2GB DDR333 (Max for the MB)
VC: Radeon x1950Pro (or GeForce 7900GS)
SC: Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music
HDD: 120GB x2
DVD: Whatever I have laying around
CASE: Deepcool Wave Tower Chassis (or the Deepcool Frame mATX Case $10 cheaper minus the 3.5" ext drive bay. Probably the better option)
PSU: 500W with amps from here to eternity
OS: Windows XP
I got a little carried away looking at parts and it completely slipped my mind that I would need an older power supply, and then I found out that the Athlon XP had rather steep requirements which lowered my choices dramatically. For all of this to work in the wardrobe I would also need to get a new KVM switch with support for at least 3 devices.
Does this proposed machine seem like a good build for the era?
Also what the hell is this? To me it looks like something leaked.
