My P2 466 rig

Postby weldum » 2017-12-31 @ 18:14

Let's go with the second pc. (the third in reality, but the 386SX is getting "fixed")
Specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium 2 350 (working at 133x3.5= 466 MHz)
Mobo: PCChips M756LMRT
Chipset: SiS 630
RAM: 512MB Dimm SDRAM PC133
Video: SiS 305 Integrated 64MB shared
Sound: CMedia 8738
NIC: SiS 900
HDD: Maxtor 8GB IDE
OS: Windows XP SP3
PSU Compaq ATX
Compaq Presario 5373 (just using the case)
Any further details anyone want to know, post here.

History:
The mobo was from my cousin’s computer, had a P3 750 and worked really well. Then she gave this computer to me and I put the P3 in a better 440BX motherboard.
The mobo had some problems, the image was really clear but with “interference”, the PS2 keyboard port doesn’t work, the CMOS battery doesn’t work at all (maybe some cut traces) and has some reliability problems (hard locks, random reboots, unable to install an OS, etc.), also do not worked with 133 MHz FSB processors, due to the reliability problems being constant.
The image and reliability problems were solved with recap the board. The PS2 and Cmos problems are currently unsolved. Now I don’t have any 133 MHz FSB CPU, but with the P2 at 466, the board works excellent.
Don’t know why but I love to do some overclock to my computers, it always surprises me how well some processors get speeded up.

The benchmarks will be posted later. There will be DOS benchs and WinXP benchs. Also, there will be benchs at 66, 100 and 133 MHz to see how much of a difference in between each "jump".
Software used: Phil’s Dos Benchmarks, Final Reality, 3DMark 99, 3DMark 2000, 3DMark 2001, Novabench, PerformanceTest 5.0 up to the last version that doesn’t require SSE nor SSE2.

Thanks and happy new year!!!

Edit: here are some benchmarks

Image

Don't know if i can do for now the other benchs.

Edit2: I've tested some games:
Unreal Tournament 2004: Yes, I know this game is overkill for a machine like this, but why not?, the game runs at like-3-or-so FPS, really strugles. Maybe the processor is the biggest bottleneck
Unreal Tournament GOTY: Runs rather slow, I'm pretty sure it's because the processor being an Pentium 2, because before, when this mobo had the P3 750 (100MHz FSB) the game ran like a Savage4 with METAL API, almost exact same FPS in each graphic adjustment.
Serious Sam TFE: Runs like crap, DirectX mode. I think I've got better performance with a P2 350 with a OEM Rage Pro Turbo and 128MB of ram in a 440BX, so clear bottleneck here is the GPU. OpenGL gets worse.
Serious Sam TSE: Even worst. I've tested it because i've noticed some "improvements" in the DirectX and OpenGL render.
GLQuake: 16.8 FPS 640x480x16, very bad performance for such a "lightweight" game. I think the OpenGL ICD is very dependant on SSE and fast clocks.
Quake 2: Really slow. Reinforces what I think about the ICD being "power hungry"
Quake 3: Strangely, this one works rather well, almost as it has a P3 750 there. Very puzzled now.
GTA 3: a very "texture dropper" slideshow, not only has very low FPS, but also the textures look very bad and low in color.
Half Life: FPS drops unless you're pointing to the floor, textures very low in color depth. The text looks bad in some menus.
Max Payne: the FPS varies a lot, from nearly 2 or 3 FPS up to 20 FPS
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2: very low FPS

All the games were tested with their lowest settings at 640x480x16
If anyone wants me to make some specific benchmarks can leave a message here or in my account.

Wouldn't for a PII PC 128mb of RAM and a 6.4gb HDD be more period correct?

maybe, don't know. But the machines that I make aren't period correct. I don't like to be "restricted" to the period correctness. also don't have a better board nor better processor. and don't want to buy anything, just want to make unbalanced computers with lots of ram and an old processor, or with good processor, low ram and windows 10.
I like that kind of "weirdness" and "uniqueness"

Then you'll probably like the computer I'm going to start a build thread for soon... :D

Your a nicer guy them most of us! Most of us wouldn't have bothered with a PC Chips motherboard, especially one that still has a faulty PS2 port and battery.
Not fan of overclocking myself but P2 350 and that board isn't anything special so think its a perfect candidate, plus its got a bit of history.
Guess it would make a nice fast late dos machine.

Edit:
Forgot to say the graph was interesting as well coming from a non overclocker.

About being nice, that's relative.
I really like retrocomputing (all with history and everything, even home computers, consoles, and such) and follow several youtubers dedicated to that.
Some time ago had a lot of computers ranging from 386DX40 up to Athlon 64 for 754, but most of them got sold because of money problems. had like 7 440BX boards from various brands, like 13 SuperSocket 7 boards all working excellent and such, but now only have the ones in my signature.
Also, making machines like mine adds more uniqueness and I personally prefeer the satisfaction of get to work just right crappy things. Also like stupidingly slow and questionable graphics cards, like the one integrated in this board.
