Hello, all. I'm Wolven and I've been into computers since the 80ies, starting off with the C=64. I've been building my own PCs since the mid 90ies and it is one of my favorite things to do.
In this post I'd like to show off my retro Windows XP build. It features most of the parts from an old PC I had back in the early 2000s. I'd forgotten about this PC, (I've had so many through the years) which I'd given to my ex some years ago. It's been collection dust in her basement for a while, until I found it again recently and decided to restore it to its former glory.
I was planning to dual boot this with Windows XP and 98SE off two hard drives, but after spending a few days trying and failing to get sound working in DOS mode, (VIA KT600...) I opted to just go with XP. I have another Win98 build planned, but I don't have all the parts for that yet.
So without further ado, here are the pictures of the hardware and the final build.
- Motherboard: ASUS A7V600
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+
RAM: 2x 512MB Corsair XMS DDR 333Mhz
HDD: Samsung 320GB S-ATA
GPU: MSI Geforce4 4200 Ti
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy
Case: Lian Li PC60
Ghetto mounted 120mm case fan (The dual 80mm was so noisy...)
The fan controller is not connected, as it makes an annoying high pitched whine when the fan speeds are turned down. I just left it in there since I'm missing two of the bay slot covers for the case.
If anyone knows how to fix the sound from the fan control, I'd be very grateful. I'm not sure if it made that sound when it was new...
So, that's my first retro build. Not as cool and beige as some of the other builds I've seen here, but it was a fun project. 😀
