Heh... I found one of those Gateways at a local auction once. It was like it was never touched - completely original. 1.3GHz willamette, 256MB RAM (might have even been 128MB, it's been a while). It booted into a seemingly virgin Windows ME install. It was as if it had never actually been used. I wanted it, but someone wanted it more than me and I wasn't going pay more than him...

I was lucky that day, walked into a little thrift store and found a stack of old computers in the back plus an original Tandy enhanced keyboard. Left there with 3 computers and the keyboard for $25. The Gateway was the best of them all though.

I really like this post cause one of my favorite retro computers is a Gateway with a socket 423 board, a 1.3 willamette (LOL) and 512MB of RDRAM and Windows ME to top it off. Found it at a thrift store for $10 and have loved it ever since. It is a beautiful machine and runs great.

Those early P4 Gateways are awesome. One of the computer labs at my high school was decked out with them back in the mid-2000's. We used that lab for our computer club and played an awful lot of counter strike on those machines. Good times.

I`m pretty sure a decent Tualatin will beat this System 😀

Except for SSE2 Video Encoding ;D

Oh definitely. I've cranked my PIII-S w/ DDR up to 1628 MHz. In non-SSE2 apps like SuperPi, 7-Zip, 3DMarks 2000-2003, and Doom 3 it's benching right up there with the 2.4/533 and 2.5/400 Northwood P4s.

Even in the P4-friendly Quake3, it's posting 216 fps @ 10x7 with the details cranked, which I believe is roughly equal to a 2GHz P4. The 155MHz bus and 2-2-2-5 timed DDR seem to help the PIII immensely.

P6 chip. Triple the speed of the Pentium.
Tualatin: PIII-S @ 1628MHz | QDI Advance 12T | 2GB DDR-310 | 6800GT | X-Fi | 500GB HDD | 3DMark01: 14,059
Dothan: PM @ 2.9GHz | MSI Speedster FA4 | 2GB DDR2-580 | GTX 750Ti | X-Fi | 500GB SSD | 3DMark01: 43,190

I know ME was/is universally panned, but back in the day I found it was pretty good if the whole system restore option was left uninstalled. Don't forget in the win9x era rebuilding your PC was like a regular maintenance item. I eventually went win2k pro for stability in college, when I was running it 24/7 as an answering machine with AIM. Remember that?
That was my old 1.0ghz p3 i815 board. Great for what it is/was.

Searching for Epson Actiontower 3000 486 PC.

I've always found millennium edition to be just a stable as 98 if not more so. If you don't need DOS it has some newer dll files that will let you do slightly more recent stuff like install the xml compatibility pack at least partially. I think it's seen as unstable because between 98 and ME the release of windows 2000 saw wide adoption and showed people that the entire 9x line lacked stability.

My wallet isnt big enough for that 🤣
Even the 5200Ultra, which would have been a good fit here, seems to demand a premium.

Very true They are rather expensive. You could mod/flash a quadro card. But its not quite the same.

Could you please tell me the name of the case?

AeroCool PGS QS-182

Though you can find it under a bunch of other names, as it's one of those products that tons of different companies just put their badge on.

After reading this, and recollecting my brain I came to two conclusions:

This build has it's own charme in some way.
My P3 build is pretty close, and that isn't even Tualatin, Coppermine all the way.

P3 933EB @1035 (7x148) | CUSL2-C | GF3Ti200 | 256M PC133cl3 @148cl3 | 98SE & XP Pro SP3
X5460 @4.1 (9x456) | P35-DS3R | GTX660Ti | 8G DDR2-800cl5 @912cl6 | XP Pro SP3 & 7 SP1
3570K @4.4 GHz | Z77-D3H | GTX1060 | 16G DDR3-1600cl9 @2133cl12 | 7 SP1

I`m sure a King @ 1.4Ghz will kill this system 😉

P3 ownz it.

The only thing its faster was video encoding with SSE2..

If speed was important, we wouldn't be on Vogons. The P4 S423 was sheer madness, which is a perfectly good reason on its own to build it now. Same reason I rebuilt my 32-bit rdram system, uncommon, frightfully expensive at the time, and out-of-date before the week was out. So I applaud this build!

Mad fun is the best kind of fun.

Hey, what about S3 DeltaChrome or some such? Provided you can get one... Now, make no mistake, I LOVE S3, and would actually really want to get my grabby paws on one, but something tells me... the drivers... cough cough.... should have been perfect 😉

Totally agree.
I got a Sony P4 sytem with RDRam a few years ago and it's kinda nice if it's being used for build titles.

Anybody wants to play with Willamette and RDRAM, I've got a Dell system here with dual Willamette Xeon sockets...

What is it called?

Is this too much voodoo?
