IBM Aptiva c77 restore.

Postby Intel486dx33 » 2019-1-07 @ 21:36

I have finally been able to acquire a descent IBM M62 desktop computer.
These where way ahead of there time. With a strange design.
The ISA riser board connects to the motherboard vertically via some small slot inserts.

Specs:
IBM Model - Aptiva 2176-C77
Intel 200mhz. MMX CPU
64mb. ram
Matox Millennium PCI graphics.
56k modem. Lucent
3com 3c509 ethernet.
Sound Blaster AWE 64. ISA
8gb Hard-drive, IDE
Windows-95b

Does anyone know of the original PC cards and hard-drive for this computer ?
And does anyone have the original install disks? I have some disks but I do not know if they are the originals ?

I love the LPX "pizzabox" format but riser cards are a pain, main benefit of a tower. This manages to suck at both!
The case is built like a tank at least.

I like the Clean simple look when the bay cover is closed.

So weird! I mean, it looks like the riser card is installed parallel to the motherboard?

Also, it has 6 ISA slots and just 2 PCI. I guess this setup would be awesome if you wanted to stuff it with many different sound devices!

HP's early Pavilions did the same thing with the riser setup. https://imgur.com/a/PrGcM

That riser card is a bit wobbly, it's indeed also not the best design if you want to change jumpers (then you need to remove it).

Yes, this system has many ISA slots, it's from late '96 - early '97.

At least this is an Aptiva with onboard ATI VGA and not the dreadful SiS which I once owned.

The original sound card was an IBM Mwave thing, modem and sound on one card. You should be able to find Windows 95 drivers for it.

The case is very durable, but the slide door can slide a bit too easily if you accidentally touch it.

You can upgrade the cache to 512KB and RAM to a mind blowing 128MB (at least on mine, this one might be slightly different).

I just installed a fresh install of Windows-95b. With updates and patches.
PC works good.
I am going to look for some original Sound card/Modem and IBM Network card.
And add more cache and ram.
I really like this computer. One of my favorites.

I had one of those, and the thing fucking SUCKED.

If you even looked at it wrong, it would freeze, or shut off, or just overall fuck up.

I ended up taking out the hard drive, CPU, RAM, power supply, and a photo scanner thing, then took a sledgehammer to it after the riser card shorted by coming loose, and killing the motherboard.

Mine is working okay.
Goes in hibernation mode and wakes up just fine.
Plays MP3’s all night long.
Surf the internet just fine with I.E. 5.5.04.
I am running a fresh install of Windows 95c
With Win95-SP1, USB patch, and TCP/IP update.
It’s stable.
