This is the first computer I ever over-clocked believe it or not.
It's a AMD5x86-133 P75(ADW) OverClocked @ 160mhz. ( Jumper settings 4x40mhz )

This computer was a mess before I received it.
It was a barn find and had been stored for quite some time.
A little TLC and it runs better than NEW now.

Performs very well with Windows-95b
Very responsive and stable.
I did NOT have to do any tweaking. Just set the motherboard jumpers to 4x40mhz.
All drivers installed Vanilla with Windows-95b. Even the Sound Blaster AWE64 compatible driver and later the upgrade to Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum PAS16.
All drivers are provided with Win95b.

The generic socket 3 heatsink+fan i'm seeing in the picture is good enough. If you really want something bulkier, you'll have to go with later heatsink meant for socket 7 up to 370 (which will require modding or some old school epoxy gluing). The bus overclock isn't adding voltage to the core, so the difference in thermals should be minimal to non-existent.

My suggestion would be to instead just use the heatsink you have and get the later ADZ model 5x86 if you REALLY need more cooling (which I don't think you do).

Grats on 160mhz, now try for the legendary 200mhz OC!!

won't argue with that a stock 486 one should do ok, I was in a different boat got one of those tc586 converters all in 1 3v - >5v for older boards which didn't have a heatsink just a glued on fan!

so I glued a socket 7 heatsink and fan to mine
got into the overclocking spirit!

and future proof if you want to try 180 in future

Yeah, I cleaned up this old fan and oiled the barrings with a shot of WD40. Runs quiet now and spins. It was not even spinning before.
I added some Artic-4 compound and reattached it to the CPU.

Thats the problem is finding a good heatsink fan that will fit a Socket-3 CPU with out having to glue one on.

I will have to buy some high temp adhesive better heatsinks with a BIG fan and then glue them on.
I really don't can as these CPU will probably never be used in any other computer unless the motherboard dies.

with some sweet cooling jam inside 😊

yeah socket 3 is very hard to find a bracket to grip it, I tried making a custom one wasted alot of time and it wasn't stable.

well u can still use it in any other system its no different to a overdrive or a cyrix chip with a glued on pretty heatsink

not sure if reconditioning fans and bearings long term is good, probably fail again, will do for short term bandaid fix.

Hey, I am on the internet right now from this computer.
Internet browsing is really slow for this website.
Using I.E. 5.50.4

I tried to over clock @ 4x50mhz ( 200mhz. ) but the computer would not even post.
So 160mhz is as fast as it will run.

Awesome! I have a 5x86 ADZ but my only board with support for it doesn't post, so it runs as a DX4 @ 120mhz. I just use Dos and Win 3.1 on it though.

200mhz can be tough. There was a great usenet discussion about getting it running at 200mhz but it seems I've recently ruined it, I went through requesting removal of dumb posts I made as a kid and it seems the whole thread came down with it =\.. I thought it would just remove my post.

I do recall ADZ models have a bit more luck at 200mhz but that's just the higher thermal capability I bet, it really comes down to the rest of your components coping with a 50mhz bus.

at 200mhz you will need to increase voltage too hence bigger heatsink combo

I ran my 5x86 at 5V by accident for a few years on a generic s3 heatsink and fan and it survived.. just my personal anecdote. It doesn't necessarily need a giant heatsink, and the ADZ model definitely doesn't, it doesn't even require a heatsink at all @ 3.3v.

BUT, I've never seen a 5x86 actually stable at 200mhz anyway, so this is really just chatter until somebody luckier than I posts a their stable system 🤣

I think I had a 486dx-50mhz. Back in 1995 on a VLB motherboard with a VLB controller and VLB graphics card Cardex Cirrus logic something. 128kb cache and a 14.4 modem. Conner 120mb hard-drive. 3com network card. And it performed terrible compared to this 5x86 computer. This 5x86 computer performs very well with Win95c. Very snappy and responsive and stable at 160mhz.

Nice radio tower. Did you manage to run 200 successfully?

I’ll have to check and see if it’s a AMD-5x86-P75 ADW or ADZ ?
I am not sure?
What exactly is the difference ?
And what do these letters stand for ?

Update: Never mind, I see.
I just confirmed I am using the ADW model but it over clocks to 160mhz fine.
Very stable and NO tweaking of the BIOS needed.
I will have to try the ADZ model on this motherboard later.
The CPU heatsink is small but it fastens to the CPU fine with Artic-4 compound.
Like glue, I think I can probably use a larger heatsink with fan and just let the Artic-4 compound act as the adhesive.
Compound is currently stuck to the CPU and heatsink like glue.

Try using IE 3 or Netscape 3.04 for fast browsing in 95! I’ve been experimenting with those over the past week.
