This computer plays CDROM's with .WAV files fine, but not MP3's ?
Is the CPU not powerful enough to play MP3's ? I am using winamp MP3 player and Win95c.

I can always connect a Bluetooth adapter to the Audio input on the sound card and stream music with my iPad.

I've heard of it being done with decoders that can squeeze out every cycle. Maybe with MPXPlay or even DOSAMP/DAMP. A 486 is probably too slow for Winamp.

Not sure if your CPU is going to be able to handle MP3 decoding unless you have a hardware decoder as is mentioned in this thread:
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=48586

Good luck finding one.

Here is a bit more information.. and it looks like you want something faster than a Pentium 75Mhz to be able to play high bitrate MP3 properly... but I guess some more optimized players might be able to do it with a slower system.

http://www.vcfed.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-22777.html

You could always design and build an MP3 decoder card yourself using the STA013 MP3 Decoder Chip.

The MP2 format is apparently less demanding than MP3.

This computer works great. But the video card is going out. So I am going to try a Number nine S3 vision 968 PCI card.
But the Media Vision PAS16P sounds great.
Which is what I really built this computer for.

I purchased some Advent desktop speakers from 1995 and they sound great. I think I can add an Advent subwoofer to these.

I really like this computer setup.
I wish I had it back in 1995.
The Advent Speakers sound awsome with the Media Vision Spectrum Pro Audio PAS16P.
It's a nice clean White computer too.
Very stable. No problems so far. No crashes.

Surfs MSN.com very good.
Vogons.org however is slow to load.
I am posting right now from this computer.
The Compact Flash card really makes a difference.
Performace is much improved with IDE CF card.
I replaced the floppy drive with a white one so the computer is all white now. runs fairly quite too.
I can play a music CD and surf the internet at the same time.
I am running Win95b, I.E. 5.50.4 ,and Win95 updates and I.E. tweeks.

An Am5x86 at 160 MHz should be able to play 128 kbps, stereo, 44khz mp3 files without skipping or downscaling. I don't recall if 192 kbps mp3s play, but I can check. What is the sample rate of the mp3s that you are playing?

Could you share the speedsys graph of your system? I have an m918 and its L2 cache performance was horrific. Perhaps this is related to your mp3 issue.

Nice looking case with a 2+1 display. Are there more of these from where ever you found it?

Here is my benchmark info here:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=28470&start=180

I am trying to play MP3’s with Winamp.

This computer was a Barn find. The case was not in to bad of shape. But not great.
I do see one on sale on eBay. But it’s a desktop model.

mp3's have many different possible sample rates for playback; the higher the sample rate, the more CPU intensive it is. What sample rate mp3s are you trying to play?

I could not locate a Speedsys screenshot in that link. Could you paste it here?

I had put the cpu back to 133mhz. Because i did not see any benefit at 166mhz.
As you can see from speedsys test results my L1 and L2 cache scores are low ?
Here is my bios settings too.

They are 192 kbps mp3s, 44khz.

Interesting that there isn't a read speed decrease for main memory. I experienced something similar to this on my m918 as well. I'll plug in my Am5x86-160 system to see if it can decode 192 kbps mp3.

There is little concern about damaging an Am5x86 at 160 MHz.
