Dell Optiplex G1 - An Act of Desecration and Butchery

Acquired a Dell Optiplex G1 recently. This is how it was before the conversion.

Image

Completely proprietary layout.

Image

Super dirty too.

Image

Cleaned it up and guttted it. All the original components are going to a friend who likes older hardware. Pentium II era Slot 1 Celeron 333MHz.

Lots of hammering and grinding involved.

Image

The rear... not terribly clean but it won't need to be. You'll see later.

Image

Even kept the original power supply swivel mechanism but had to cut into it a bit.

Image

Demonstration of the swivel

Image

And here's the front after the cleanup

Image

Top looks much better.

Image

Side

Image

Rear... this was cut up from an old eMachines Pentium 4 tower that was in crummy condition on the exterior. It was bolted into the original chassis. The hardware is as follows:
Lenovo ThinkCentre M57 motherboard
Antec EA-380 80+ 380W power supply
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz dual core processor
8GB DDR2 RAM (4x2GB)
XFX NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT 512MB PCIe video card
DVDRW drive with white faceplate
3.5" floppy drive
128GB SanDisk X110 SSD
640GB Western Digital 7200RPM HD

Another overhead view

Image

The original Optiplex drive cage was interfering with the motherboard. Let's go with the eMachines drive cage.

Image

Can hold 2 drives in there.

One of those fancy high end RTX GPUs

great work, the back looks weird but no one should see it.
btw, why 8gb if you're using standard 32 bit XP? with a machine like that i won't put more than 2 GB

They're probably my favorite case design because of elementary school computer lab nostalgia so I must civilly tell you that you are mistaken

That case actually does look decent after a nice bath. When I picture them it's always disgusting and stained from sitting in computer labs with big open windows.

Does that dark xp theme you're using come with xp? I can't remember, haven't actually used XP in quite some years already
Sup. I like computers. Are you a computer?

It's this one https://www.istartedsomething.com/20061029/royale-noir/

Yeah they're increasingly difficult to find in great shape. Goes for pretty much any 20+ year old PC... most of the time you will have to put some work into cleaning and restoring it if you want it to look great. I've retrobrighted it again and it looks just as white as my Optiplex GX110 tower so it won't get any better than that.
