my chenbro sr209 case has been sitting empty for a a few months. this is unacceptable. i even tried to give it away to another member of this forum.

ok... fine, then build i must.

i usually don't bother with build logs. mostly because i'm lazy and i forget to pictures of the parts but, this one has some cool check points.

dual cpu - cool
scsi raid - cool
3d modeling, engineering and webdev software - super cool

the era for this build is the year 2000.

good build. I have a similar but with dual 1000 and I840. Mine is not raid, it is just U160 SCSI. I like your case a lot though..

Pics of mine.

thanks, i didn't know there was a cinebench 2000. this is even better!!!

cinebench 2000 is the same thing as cinebench 1.0, I think its just updated for windows 2000 support.

I think you have it the wrong way round!

dual cpu - super cool
scsi raid - super cool
3d modeling, engineering and webdev software - meh 😉

You also missed out on Slot 1 super cool and also jealous you cracked the 600Mhz barrier all my Duel Slot 1 boards can't go above this 🙁

We also have the Quake 3 SMP list if your looking for more excuses for that 2nd CPU
quake3 SMP-scaling thread…

How about any heat problems with the 4 scsi hard drives installed together?

How is the noise? They are the parts you can hear mostly out of your case right?

the drive cage has a 92mm fan installed right in the front so the drives don't get warm at all. no fan installed in the photo but, you can see where it goes.

you can definitely hear the drives spinning. they are not quiet at all. turbine engine sound comes to mind. disk access also has a satisfying crunchy sound.

I absolutely love the style of this build. The Chenbro case is looking super clean, I have been tempted to get one of those myself, but unfortunately they are not exactly compact. And since storage space is always a concern, I couldn't yet decide if I really want one...

SCSI drives are cool and period correct and all, but how on earth do you bear the noise? By wearing ear muffs all the time?
I have a dual Tualatin build myself that has a 4 disk SCSI RAID in it, and powering that thing up sounds like a freaking jet engine... If I would actually use that machine the first thing I'd do is replace those disks with something more silent.

I prefer my retro machines to be loud and aggressive sounding, not everyone shares your tastes

Any idea what kind of memory sticks can be used to upgrade the increase adapter cache? I own the same raid adapter and allways wanted to find out. Slot coding looked like 3.3V buffered SD-RAM, but I havent verified yet.

i haven't tried updating the cache.
i'm just using raid 0 currently so it doesn't even use the cache.
the card doesn't use a battery so i wouldn't use the cache anyways.

Nice looking case you have there. I used this same case for a Pentium Pro build: Re: Graphics card for Pentium Pro build
Like you, I added an Adaptec RAID card, but because of noise issues, I went with IDE RAID. I setup RAID 10 with four 73 GB drives.

My main complaints about the case is the lack of a proper 3.5" floppy bay and those fidgety expansion card slot holder "thingie". It doesn't hold the expansion cards in very well, some cards don't fit in it properly (e.g. they are too tall), and for long RAID cards, I found that I had to remove the 3 screws holding in the mechanism to get the RAID card in/out. I'm really close to tossing the expansion card retainer and just use normal case screws for each card. What was your thoughts on this "thingie"?

EDITs:
Another annoyance I forgot to mention is related to the hard drive cage - it contained some kind of plastic grommets which fell apart when I tried to use them. I had to punch them all out, but then the hard drive cage is too large for the hard drives, so it bends in a bit when I screw the HDD's in. Also, because of these grommets, the hard drive mount holes are too large without the grommets, so I had to use washers on the screws. I see that you have some special screws with a very wide head. Did your case come with those?

Another thing I forgot to mention was the blue power LED shines way too bright with my PPRO motherboard. It was so bright that it shown into the HDD and NIC LEDs to the point that you could not see those other LED's light up. I had to add a resistor between the motherboard's power LED header and the Power LED so that it shines at a more suitable intensity.

I use the rear exhaust fan at 5 V instead of 12 V.
