Hi,

additionally to what I wrote before (go to step 1: connect the CD drive as slave on your IDE controller, where master is the harddisk).

Download a windows 98 or windows 98 SE bootdisk.
Normally IDE CD drives always work out of the box with it.

Thanks, man, I feel a little better now.
With Win 98 floppy boot disk, HDD as a master, CDROM as a slave I got it working.
What I am observing now is that this 8x CDROM of Mitsumi is working quite badly. I am heaving troubles reading CD media: some of them can not even read, some of them I must "retry" to get the data down.

OK:
1. How should I proceed toward "working CD in MS-DOS":
a. As slave on I/O card
b. As master on Sound Card IDE
2. Can CD-ROM be cleaned somehow, so it would read CD media better?

Tnx

Yes, it can, either with a cleaning CD or by disassembling the drive to get at the lens.

All hail the Great Capacitor Brand Finder

1a) Do you need support for that?
From the Windows 98 boot floppy you need
the sys file for the device=
The mscdex line in autoexec.bat.
And of course you should copy those 2 files to your local harddisk to be able to use it in your config.sys and autoexec.bat.

1b) Use the jumper setting that gdjacobs described
(IDECHRDY, IDEDIS, IDEIO0, IDEIO1) should ideally be closed, open, open, closed
connect your CD as master with an extra cable and boot from the windows 98 disk.
Does it work?
