If you really want help you need to answer these questions. A bit like a customer wanting to have his/her IT guy to solve an issue back in the early '90s.

I think the motherboard bios is bad. I am going to have to get a new 386 motherboard.

What gives you that idea exactly?

And even if the BIOS is bad, why not get a new BIOS chip, program it and install it?

Actually, I have been looking for another motherboard because this one only has 64kb cache.
But I will trouble shoot this motherboard some more and try to figure out why it is not detecting IDE hard drives.

64k is doing well for a 386, a few have 128k but it seemed like only hybrid boards or IBMs had the full 256

For an 386SX mobo that is quite a reasonable cache. Try and sort you hdd issue out first.. If you don't know what you are doing get someone local to help you.

Pretty much all the hybrid boards did 128k or 256k, but quite a few true 386 chipsets supported 256kb too...not always in the first revision however. They were less common, but not impossible to find.

We are talking about a 386SX here.

Well, I am trying to build a good 386 multimedia computer with 16mb ram, CDROM, and sound card.
I want it to play DOS games in best playback quality.
So I want a math-co processor too.

Win3x uses allot of ram too.

I currently have it setup in this Nice Aluminum Lian Li case until I can find an appropriate case.

I also want to be able to slow it down to 12mhz 286 speed if possible. So I will run it at 33mhz speed by default.

We are talking about a 386SX here.

Well, that is not 100% certain. If you look at the first page of the thread a second 386 board is shown which is a DX. The author stated his board had 64kb cache, while the SX board shown clearly has none.

My goal is to get the most out of the 386 CPU and also be able to down clock it with no problems.
For best game play.
I am really not trying to be period correct. And I am trying to eliminate any bottle necks.

If you read the whole thread the OP flip flops all over the place as he usually does, doesn't respond to legit questions to try and help him out and comes out with some unrelated post afterwards.. Also he claims to have been an IT tech in the early '90s yet he is absolutely clueless about that era kit and how to sort them out.

The hard-drive became corrupt and gained a bad sector so I had to reformat it and reinstall everything.
It is working fine again.

There is NO way to disable cache in bios. So I have to use the Setmul utility.
And disable L1 cache this way. But it does nothing. And turn off the turbo switch only slows down the CPU to a 386sx@20mhz.
I was hoping to go as slow as a 8088 CPU.
My 486dx4@100 can go as slow as a 286@20mhz.
I know I was able to slowdown a computer to a 8088 buy I dont remember which computer it was ?

Has anyone had success doing this ?

I am going to work on this today.
Maybe play around with different sound cards.
I will benchmark it today.

I really like the look of the Model 40SX. A proper full height desktop case. It looks like a microchannel system, but it takes ISA cards!

Yeah, I like the looks to but I don’t like the proprietary hardware and bios thats why I went with a third party IBM compatible.
