I'm switching out the 2 280's for a single 480 so not a big deal.

OHHH, do you plan to do any cooking with that PC? haha, no jokcing aside I used to have dual 480s and wile they were hot, the hype was over rated.

Oh they're definitely hot cards, but yeah.

If this board properly supports SLI, I might snag another one down the road, not anytime soon though.

Also if this board supports Westmere, I got a W3680 (literally a 980x, Even unlocked like a 980x and only 1 QPI link like a 980x), I might put it in here.

Hopefully it supports both.

This is very similar to one of my builds - more specifically the Intel 2008 build:
Q9650 with Cooler master 212
Abit IX38QUADGT
Corsair 4*2gb DDR2-800
Radeon 4870*2 in Crossfire
Intel 80gb SSD + WD 1.000gb HDD
Corsair TX850M PSU - brand new, not period correct!
It feels like a modern rig even with heavy websites such as Youtube or Facebook and all period correct games are running maxed out - with the exception of Crysis of course! Windows 7 runs superbly on this machine!

Ohh the Abit ix38. I had one back in the day and loved it, that was until I got a quad... Both it and the IX48 just weren't a good board for overclocking quads sadly.

How well do the 4870's run in Crossfire?

I got two Visiontek 4870 512mb editions that had Mass Effect artwork on the box so I'm curious.

Very well, in fact period correct games seems to have been optimized for multi GPU far better than most of today games. I should mention that I have the 1gb variant of the 4870 and the bigger VRAM buffer does make a difference!
Company of heroes - the original with all the expansions - runs at 1600*1200 with everything cranked up including AA smoothly; Quake 4 flies on this machine even with the high texture pack; NFS carbon & MW run with full details also.
The monitor that I use with all of my retro systems is the awesome EIZO S2100 21.3 inch the largest classic aspect ratio monitor with one of the best image of all LCD monitors that I have ever used.
I should mention that I do not overclock my retro systems - longevity and stability is more important; using high resolution such as 1600*1200 with AA removes the CPU bottleneck I think.
Corsair TX850M is not complaining about the power usage and I did not encountered a single crash 😀

X58 Lanparty came in, had to update bios as the bios is came with was buggy AF. Good news is it works and has SLI support according to AIDA64, bad news is the W3680 doesn't work with it, that chip works fine with an Asus P6T on the otherhand. But I've seen photos of the 980x working with it so might try that down road. Swapped the 920 for a Xeon W3540 I had around here. Works fine with that.

I recall reading about buggy bios for the x58 lan party boards. You may want to look for a modded bios for W3680 CPUs. I do not recall any being out there but its worth looking into.

I'm good, this thing was a nightmare to fully setup and I looked into it, I couldn't find anything. If I get a 980x, great, otherwise I'm sticking with this W3540.

DFI boards from that time can indeed be a nightmare.
I had a DFI x48 board with a qx9650 and wile I loved the setup, it took forever to get it running with a good OC with all the settings it had. However I was able to get a heck of a lot more out of the CPU in that board compared to a abit ix48 and a few Asus boards I tried back in the day. If I recall I ended up at 4.6ghz daily stable. The cpu, but also the chipset and VRM were all water cooled so heat was not so much as a problem as one would think.

I'm running stock, don't know how to oc X58 and last time I tried was with the P6T I got and a X5670 and I think I somehow blew one or two imcs on that chip. Also the board didn't come with the flame freezer thing, not sure if it's required. I don't think it is as the vrm heatsink looks quiet beefy but this is the first time I've used a board with a Volterra PWM VRM.
